Martin Sets School Record in 100 Meters as Corban Shines at Ralph Vernacchia Meet

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Freshman Nathan Martin (Turner, Ore.) highlighted the big day for the Corban University men's track & field team at the Ralph Vernacchia Track & Field Meet, clocking the fastest time in program history in the 100 Meters to set a new school record. On top of Martin's career-best effort, a number of other season-best marks were recorded by the Warriors throughout the meet.

Martin crossed the finish line in fourth place at the meet in the 100 Meters, clocking the new school-record time of 10.94 seconds, becoming the first-ever Warrior to break the 11-second barrier in the process.

Martin was also a member of the Warrior 4x100 Relay squad that finished in second place overall with a season-best time of 41.78 seconds. The foursome of senior Brett Johnson (Bellingham, Wash.), senior Jacob Ybarra (Boise, Idaho), Martin, and sophomore Michael Trofimchik (Salem, Ore.) combined for the time, and that mark now ranks first overall in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) by almost a 0.50 seconds.

In the 400 Meters, senior Nathan Swanson (Newberg, Ore.) ran well and took second overall with a time of 48.97 seconds. While not his season-best time, he still ranks first overall in the CCC in the event.

Also in the 400 Meters, sophomore Amadi Amaitsa (Keizer, Ore.) clocked a career-best time of 50.30 seconds to take seventh overall in the race.

Johnson shined for Corban on the day, breaking his previous school record in the 100 Meters with a career-best mark of 11.04 seconds, just getting beat out by Martin who set the new school record in the race. Then in the 200 Meters, Johnson uncorked a season-best time of 22.01 seconds, a time that now ranks him first overall in the CCC for the 2015 campaign. At the meet, he took third place in the race.

Closing out the meet, the 4x400 Relay quartet of Amaitsa, Swanson, Johnson, and Trofimchik blew past the competition again with a winning time of 3:17.23, defeating a number of NCAA Division II teams by two or more seconds in the victory.

"The competition was really great, and I feel really good about our performances today," said head coach Norm Berney. "Our 4x400 Relay ran really strong today, but we got ahead and didn't have anyone to push us to really get a good time. The 4x100 Relay ran its best race of the season, and to do it in cold conditions was really a strong effort, and it was great to see Nathan Martin break the school record in the 100 Meters."
