Corban Track & Field Sweeps CCC Athlete of the Week Awards, Winning All Four

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) office announced on Monday that the Corban University track & field team won all four of the possible CCC Athlete of the Week awards, completing the clean sweep for the Warriors. For Corban, it is the first time in school history that the Warrior track & field programs have won all four awards in the same week, and it caps off a record-setting week in which Corban athletic programs garnered a school-record six total CCC Athlete of the Week awards across all sports.

On the women's side, freshman Lindsay Asplund (Battle Ground, Wash.) garnered the CCC Field Athlete of the Week accolade, while senior Cecilee Russell (Hillsboro, Ore.) won the CCC Track Athlete of the Week plaudit. On the men's side, sophomore Nathan Martin (Turner, Ore.) received the CCC Track Athlete of the Week award, while fellow sophomore Jason Bracken (Battle Ground, Wash.) won the CCC Field Athlete of the Week honor.

For each of the four athletes, it marks their first-ever CCC Athlete of the Week awards in their respective careers.

"It was and outstanding performance from all four award-winners, and it was the first time we've ever won all four individual athlete of the week awards for the CCC," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "Each one of these individuals will be a real factor in the conference championships."

Asplund came from behind in the Heptathlon at the Pacific Combined Events on Tuesday, winning the meet in dramatic fashion with a total score of 3617 points. The point total was two points better than the second-place finisher, a remarkably close finish in the Heptathlon. It was the 800 Meters that won it for Asplund, as she uncorked a winning time of 2:25.22 in that final event of the Heptathlon, winning by four seconds. Her point total ranks fourth overall in program history.

Russell uncorked a new school record time in the 400 Meter Hurdles on Saturday at the Willamette Invite, crossing the finish line in an NAIA 'A' standard time of 1:03.17. That mark qualified her for nationals, and at the event, she finished only behind one NCAA Division I runner from Oregon State University.

Martin clocked a new school record for Corban in the 100 Meters, breaking the 11-second barrier with a career-best time of 10.92 seconds. While competing against many of the best runners from the west coast in the event at the Willamette Invite, he took third place overall in the event.

Bracken shattered the school record in the Decathlon last week at the Pacific Combined Events, scoring 6125 points while finishing in second overall at the meet, only behind an NCAA Division 1 Portland State University competitor. Bracken won three of the 10 events en route to his school-record mark. His point total ranks No. 2 overall in the NAIA currently.

Corban returns to action this Saturday at the Jen Boymen Invite over at Linfield College. The meet is set to start at approximately 10 a.m.
