HERMISTON, Ore. – With great performances all across the board, the Corban University track & field teams shined on day one of the 2016 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Championships, registering multiple career-best marks while garnering all-conference accolades. After the first day of competition, the Warrior women sit in third place (57.5 points), while the Corban men are in fourth place (48 points) of the nine total teams competing on each side.

The day was capped off by what was maybe the most exciting 10,000 Meters race that the CCC has seen in years. Warrior junior Zach Steele (Oregon City, Ore.) went out at his normal pace and extended a lead early on to upwards of 50 meters, distancing himself from the pack. Eventually as the pack caught up with Steele midway through the race, he kept pace with the group of seven, all the way until the final lap. On that final lap, Steele went with the breakaway group and finished strong, passing four runners en route to a thrilling third-place finish, crossing the finish line in an All-CCC time of 32:30.58. The time is the third-fastest in program history, and Steele becomes the second Warrior male to ever garner All-CCC honors in the 10k.

With there being many other highlights during the day, the women's 4x100 quartet ran a blistering season-best time of 49.05 seconds, taking third place to land on the podium and collect All-CCC plaudits. Sophomore Adrianna Curteman (Albany, Ore.), senior Cecilee Russell (Hillsboro, Ore.), senior Chelsea Petersen (Sisters, Ore.), and freshman Kristi Childers (Milton Freewater, Ore.) combined for the All-CCC time.

Also collecting All-CCC accolades for the Corban women were seniors Lexi Mitzel (Salem, Ore.), Kelsey Wright (Beaverton, Ore.), and Sarah Taylor (Bend, Ore.). Mitzel placed second overall and was Corban's highest finisher on the day, taking the silver medal in the 10,000 Meters (40:17.94). Wright placed third in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 132' 2" to garner All-CCC honors, while Taylor cleared a height of 5' 3" to place third overall and receive All-CCC plaudits.

Additionally, junior Crystal Lynch (Ocean Shores, Wash.) shined in the Shot Put, tossing a career-best throw of 40' 11" to take third overall and land on the podium.

Also scoring key points for the Warrior women were senior Alli Ehrhardt (Rogue River, Ore.) in the High Jump (4' 11", seventh place), while sophomore Mackenzie Howell (Sherwood, Ore.) took fifth overall in the Hammer with a toss of 126' 2". In the 400 Meters, Russell clocked a time of 58.15 seconds to place fourth, while Petersen also crossed the finish line in fourth place with a time of 15.76 seconds in the 100 Hurdles.

While no one other than Steele garnered All-CCC plaudits for the Warrior men on day one, a number of others performed well and scored important points for the Corban men. In the 1500 meters, junior Craig Boekenoogen (Poulsbo, Wash.) placed sixth overall against a competitive field with a time of 4:01.65. Sophomore Nathan Martin (Turner, Ore.) went up against a blistering-fast field in the 110 Hurdles, and he uncorked a school-record time of 15.15 seconds, taking fifth overall.

In the 4x100 Relay, the foursome of junior Timothy Yee (Calexico, Calif.), sophomore Christian Bohuslavizki (Santa Margarita, Calif.), Martin, and junior Amadi Amaitsa (Keizer, Ore.) combined for a fourth-place showing of 42.41 seconds.

In the High Jump, freshman Asa Flanagan (Scappoose, Ore.) and senior Caleb Wilkins (Milwaukie, Ore.) tied for fourth place with clearing heights of 5' 11", while over in the Shot Put, senior Dane Walker (Anchorage, Alaska) placed sixth with a throw of 44' 10".

Finally, Corban's other key event was the 400 Meters in which Amaitsa placed fifth (50.14 seconds) and Bohuslavizki took seventh (50.35 seconds).

Day two of the CCC Track & Field Championships is set to begin at 11 a.m. at Hermiston High School. Live stats will be available online here.
