Swoboda Loses Shoe, Breaks Toe, and Still Finishes NAIA Championship Race

VANCOUVER, Wash. – In what was one of the most remarkable races that Corban University men's cross country has ever seen, rookie Robert Swoboda got stepped on in the first 800 Meters, losing his shoe and breaking his toe in the process, but Swoboda did not let it faze him, still finishing the race at the NAIA National Championships. Swoboda took 111th overall out of 328 runners with a time of 26:20.

RACE RESULTS

"Robert ran the second-fastest time ever for a Corban male at nationals," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "This is in spite of a broken toe and running without a shoe. It was one of the gutsiest performances I have ever observed in my coaching career."

After getting off to a great start and as a part of the front of the pack on Saturday at Fort Vancouver, Swoboda was stepped on accidently by another runner, causing him to lose his shoe. In the process of that, he broke his toe, but Swoboda pushed on. Later in the race, due to not having good footing without the shoe on one foot, Swoboda twisted his ankle, but still, he pushed on.

Swoboda finished strong and capped off an incredible race and rookie season, showing that he will undoubtedly be the anchor of the Warrior men's cross country team for years to come.
