SALEM, Ore. – Corban University men's track & field rookie standout Reagan Shira captured the Willamette Multi-Event Meet Title on Wednesday evening, winning the Decathlon for the Warriors in his first time ever competing in the event. Shira totaled 5,312 points in the winning performance.
"It was a great day for our two freshmen in the Decathlon with a first and third-place finish," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "They competed throughout heavy rain and still were able to make a solid showing for the team because all of their points carry over to the dual meet score."
Shira, after trailing following the conclusion Tuesday's first five events, came from behind on Wednesday and captured his first-ever Decathlon championship thanks to a thrilling 1500 Meters, defeating the second-place Willamette finisher by 11 seconds en route to garnering enough points to catapult into first place, defeating his Willamette foe by 37 points. His 1500 Meters time was 4:50.25 seconds, earning 617 points in the final event.
Shira shined in a number of events, winning the Long Jump (20' 5"), the 400 Meters (53.50 seconds), the 110m Hurdles (16.25 seconds), and the Pole Vault (10' 11.50"), to go along with his 1500m winning time.
Fellow Warrior freshman Seth Larson also competed for the Warriors, winning the Discus Throw with a distance of 76' 1.25". Larson showed well in his first-ever decathlon overall, taking third with a score of 4,142 points.
RESULTS
The remainder of the Corban and Willamette track & field athletes are back at it tomorrow as the two cross-town foes will battle it out in the Willamette-Corban Dual Meet. The meet is scheduled to begin at Willamette's Charles Bowles Track at 3 p.m.
