LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) office announced on Monday that Corban University men's track & field standout Craig Boekenoogen was named the CCC Male Track Athlete of the Week for his performance on the track this past week. For Boekenoogen, it marks his first-ever CCC Athlete of the Week honor.
"It is a great honor for Craig and is proof of his dedication in academics and athletics," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "His hard work has paid off and we'd like to give credit to Coach Brent Fahsholz in developing Craig in the Steeplechase. We are very excited to see how he finishes the rest of this season as one of the top Steeplechase athletes in the NAIA."
Boekenoogen made history for the Warriors on Thursday, setting a school record in the Steeplechase while hitting an NAIA 'A' standard time in a winning effort at the Willamette Dual Meet. While crossing the line in a winning time of 19:19.80, he won the race convincingly and became Corban's second automatic qualifier for the NAIA National Championships during the 2017 season, joining fellow senior distance runner Zach Steele who had already qualified in the Marathon earlier in the year. Boekenoogen's time currently ranks No. 2 overall in the NAIA by just one second.
CCC Sports Information Directors nominate and vote upon CCC Athletes of the Week.
Corban returns to the track this weekend at the Willamette Invite with select individuals competing. The meet is set to start at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
