GULF SHORE, Ala. – While winning three different events and taking second place in another, Corban University men's track & field standout Jason Bracken became the Warriors' second-ever male track & field All-American, placing seventh overall in the Decathlon at the 2017 NAIA Track & Field National Championships. Close behind him was rookie Michael Schmidt, as Schmidt finished in ninth place overall, showing real promise for future years for the Warriors.

RESULTS

"It was a great national meet for our two Decathletes with two PR's in the event," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "Jason Bracken won three events and was second in the Shot Put and became our second-ever male All-American at Corban. "Michael Schmidt had a great finish with a PR in the 1500, and he competed well throughout the meet. The future bodes well for these two athletes because they were just a few points out of placing much higher. We are looking forward to tomorrow."

Bracken set a new school record with a mark of 6,448 points in the Decathlon, surpassing his previous career-best mark in the process. Schmidt also set a new career-best mark, scoring 6,391 points for his ninth-place showing.

Bracken shined in four events, winning three of them. After winning the High Jump on the first day (6' 5"), he went on to win the Discus (146' 9.25") and the Javelin (181' 5.75") on the second day of action. In addition, Bracken placed second overall in the Shot Put with a heave of 42' 2.75".

Schmidt performed better than before in almost every event as well, and in the 1500 Meters to close out the meet, he clocked a career-best time of 4:25.45, taking third overall in the race to close the meet strong.

Two more Corban male track & field athletes are back in action tomorrow, as Zach Steele is set to compete in the Marathon at 6 a.m. CST, while Craig Boekenoogen will race in the 3000m Steeplechase at 2:20 p.m. CST.
