ASHLAND, Ore. – Michael Schmidt set a new school record and Jason Bracken was not far behind as the Corban University men's track & field team shined at the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Decathlon, with Schmidt taking second overall and Bracken third. In addition, Reagan Shira also placed sixth for the Warriors in their best-ever CCC Decathlon as a team.
RESULTS
"Both Michael and Jason won a couple of events each and are both ranked in the top-5 nationally in the Decathlon," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "Reagan also PR'd by over 200 points and is in the running for the NAIA National Championships as well. This was by far our best Decathlon ever."
Schmidt's score of 6,608 points shattered the previous school record held by Bracken, and it has him ranked now No. 2 overall in the NAIA, as the CCC Decathlon was a bit of a 'mini-nationals.' In the 400 Meters, he shined with a winning time (48.99 seconds), and in the 1500 Meters to close out the Decathlon event, he clocked a winning time of 4:36.35 to score big points.
Bracken also won a couple of events, as he won the Discus with a toss of 146' 5" while also winning the Shot Put with a throw of 44' 6.75". Bracken's third-place total of 6,475 points bested his previous school record which he set prior to this year.
Shira finished with 6,067 points and has himself in contention for a spot at the NAIA National Championships in the event. The top-16 ranked Decathletes at the end of the year qualify for nationals. Shira currently ranks No. 10 overall.
On top of the Warrior Decathletes, Robert Swoboda competed at the Raider Invite on Friday evening, and while running at a blistering pace, he set a new school record in the 5k with a time of 15:01.79, taking ninth overall in the highly-competitive race.
The Warriors are back in action as a team on Saturday at the Clackamas Invite.
