Martin Makes History as Corban Men’s Track Places Fourth at CCC Championships

HERMISTON, Ore. – Nathan Martin made history by winning the 100 Meters and 200 Meters on Saturday, leading the Corban University men's track & field team to a fourth-place finish at the 2018 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Championships.

"Our men's and women's teams scored way over their predicted scores and they competed at a very high level throughout the meet," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "Nathan Martin ended up being the CCC Track Athlete of the Meet with the best performance in Corban men's track history."

For his efforts at the meet on the whole, Martin garnered the CCC Men's Track Athlete of the Meet accolade. He makes it back-to-back years that the Warriors have collected an Athlete of the Meet award (Jason Bracken – 2017). Martin also joined Warrior women's standout Lindsay Asplund on the award podium, as Asplund garnered the CCC Women's Co-Field Athlete of the Meet honor.

Martin clocked a time of 11.03 seconds in the 100 Meters, going against the wind, just edging out his competitors by 0.04 seconds for first place. He becomes Corban's first-ever 100 Meters CCC Champion.

Following that race, Martin then repeated his championship race in the 200 Meters from two years ago on the same track, but this time, he ran even better. While resetting a 20-year old record that had been in place since 1998, Martin crossed the finish line in first place in a time of 21.33 seconds, winning in a photo finish over his closest competitor by 0.01 seconds. The time was an NAIA 'A' standard time, and he will compete in the event at nationals in two weeks.

It was more than just Martin setting new records for the Warriors, as Corban totaled 110 points overall as a team, very solidly in fourth place overall as a team. Two of the big point scorers were Jason Bracken and Kenny Purnell, as the two Discus throwers finished in second and third place overall in the event. Bracken hurled a throw of 145' 1", while Purnell finished with a toss of 139' 6".

On top of those guys, Michael Schmidt came from behind in the 400m Hurdles to finish strong and land on the podium with a third-place showing, crossing the finish line in a mark of 54.54 seconds – an NAIA 'B' standard time.

Corban will now wait for the official announcement to come from the NAIA on all of the official qualifiers for the NAIA National Championships. Martin is qualified and will compete in the 110m Hurdles and 200 Meters at the national championships, and unofficially, Schmidt, Bracken, and Reagan Shira still all remain ranked in the NAIA's top-16 for the Decathlon. If that remains the same, all three will qualify for the National Championship Meet.
