GULF SHORES, Ala. – While the Corban University track & field team saw two of the greatest athletes to ever don the Navy and Gold compete for their last time ever collegiately on Friday, Michael Schmidt showed that there is a bright future ahead for the Warriors. While placing sixth overall in the Decathlon, Schmidt collected NAIA All-American plaudits at the NAIA Track & Field National Championships.

"Our younger athletes gained valuable experience and we came back strong in the Decathlon on Friday," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "Several PRs were set on Friday, with all of our men setting personal bests in the Decathlon 1500 Meters. In spite of missing over a week of practice, Nathan Martin and Lindsay Asplund ran competitively and our 4x100m Relay team ran against some extremely fast runners from the south. It was a great meet and our athletes represented Corban well."
Schmidt finished in sixth place overall in the highly-competitive Decathlon, placing higher than any other Warrior Decathlete before him. Schmidt shined in a couple of the running events, taking second place in both the 400 Meters on Thursday and in the 1500 Meters on Friday, clocking a career-best time of 4:22.28 seconds. He finished with 6612 total points, setting a new school record in the process.
Reagan Shira finished out his sophomore year with a 12th-place showing overall, scoring 6010 points, while Jason Bracken had a great overall performance, but a DQ in the 110m Hurdles ended up costing him as he received zero points in the event, ultimately seeing him take 15th overall while still scoring 5855 points.
For Bracken, the career finishes as one of the all-time greats, following his All-America performance (7th place) in 2017 in the Decathlon to go with his CCC Field Athlete of the Meet accolade.
One other career finished on Friday, as Nathan Martin closed out his heralded season with the Warriors with a 20th-place showing in the 110m Hurdles, clocking a time of 14.83 seconds. For Martin, the senior year was capped with Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) individual championships in both the 100 Meters and 200 Meters, and he garnered the CCC Track Athlete of the Meet plaudits.
Both Bracken and Martin finish their careers on the men's side, but with both Schmidt and Shira returning for the Warrior men, and all six Warrior female national qualifiers from 2018 returning next year, there is no doubt a bright future ahead for the Navy and Gold.
