Corban Men’s Track & Field Finishes Strong to Take Fourth at CCC Championships

ASHLAND, Ore. – Capped off by an unbelievable final race, the Corban University men's track & field team finished in fourth place overall at the 2017 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Championships, marking the third-straight year that the Warriors have place fourth at the CCC Championships (126 points). The meet was highlighted by multiple event wins over the course of the two days, and when all was said and done, the CCC honored Corban's Jason Bracken as the CCC Field Athlete of the Meet.

Day One Recap

"Jason Bracken provided and exceptional overall performance, becoming the Male Field Athlete of the Meet," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "He broke our school record for most total points, scoring 31 points towards our team total, and it was the first time that someone in a Corban uniform had ever scored in six different events."

For Corban, it marks the first time the school has received an 'Athlete of the Meet' honor, and for Bracken, his 31 points were the most points ever scored by a Corban athlete at the CCC Championship meet. Bracken won the High Jump, placed third in the Decathlon, sixth in the Shot Put, and then on Saturday took third in the Discus (145' 3"), fifth in the Javelin (175' 5"), and eighth in the Triple Jump (41' 9").

With his performances, Bracken scored more points by himself than four CCC schools scored at the championship meet (Northwest University, Warner Pacific College, The Evergreen State College, and Multnomah University).

The Warrior 4x400 Relay combination of Holden Quinn, Nathan Martin, Amadi Amaitsa, and Michael Schmidt came through clutch in the final race of the 2017 Championships, coming from behind on the final leg in the home stretch to place third overall (3:21.71) in the race and land on the podium in dramatic fashion.

Schmidt not only came through with the fantastic kick to push Corban onto the podium in the 4x400 Relay, but he also uncorked a career-best time in the 400m Hurdles, crossing the finish line in a second-place mark of 56.07 seconds. Schmidt had never actually run in the 400m Hurdle race before, so landing in second place on the podium in the event scored Corban big points.

Another highlight of the day came in the Triple Jump, in which Corban's Reagan Shira placed second overall (44' 1") and Timothy Yee took third (42' 10"), both garnering All-CCC honors in the process. In addition, Asa Flanagan recorded a fifth-place showing in the same event with a jump of 42' 5".

Elsewhere in the field events, joining Bracken as a point scorer in the Javelin was J'Rhett Baker with a distance of 165' 8".

On the track, Nathan Martin took seventh in the 100 Meters (10.93 seconds) and seventh in the 200 Meters (22.48 seconds), while over in the 5000 Meters, Craig Boekenoogen clocked a time of 15:08.24 seconds, placing fifth overall to score key points for Corban.

Also scoring points for the Navy and Gold were Shira and Stephen Anderson the 400 Hurdles, with Shira taking sixth (57.95 seconds) and Anderson in eighth (60.82 seconds)

"Craig Boekenoogen continues to shine for the Warriors and is ranked No. 7 in the Steeplechase heading into nationals," said Berney. "Overall we felt really good about our team finish, as even after losing our team captain to an ankle injury, we still finished strong to take fourth with our second-highest point total ever for our men."

Both Boekenoogen (Steeplechase) and Zach Steele (Marathon) are set to compete at the NAIA National Championships in a couple of weeks, and Bracken and Schmidt are both currently ranked high enough to qualify in the Decathlon at the NAIA National Championships. The official announcement of national qualifiers will be made by the NAIA in the upcoming week.
