Corban Track Impresses in Season-Opening Meets with Winning Marks

SALEM, Ore. – While the distance runners excelled on Friday evening at the Linfield Ice Breaker, numerous Corban University track & field athletes dominated on Saturday at the Willamette Opener, winning multiple events en route to recording solid early-season marks.

RESULTS

"The men's and women's track & field teams got off to great starts with the combined teams winning nine events," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. We had many great individual performances that we will look to build on, and we look forward to having many athletes back in a couple of weeks when we will be at full strength. It was one of the best opening meets we have participated in since we started a full track & field team 10 years ago."

Michael Schmidt put together a fantastic overall performance for the Warrior men on Saturday, and it started by winning the 400 Meters with a time of 49.61 seconds. He followed that up with a winning time in the 110m Hurdles, crossing the finish line in a mark of 15.93 seconds. He then won the High Jump with a clearing height of 6' 0" and took third overall in the Long Jump with a distance of 19' 10 ¼".

Nate Martin shined in the 200 Meters for Corban, crossing the finish line in first place with a time of 22.31 seconds, while Jason Bracken won the Discus with a toss of 151' 8 ¾". In the Javelin, rookie Morgan Strunk impressed with a winning throw of 166' 9", beating out the rest of the field.

On the women's side, Kristi Childers uncorked a first-place time in the 100m Hurdles, registering a mark of 16.40 seconds. Renee Inscore then won the Javelin with a throw of 127' 9 ¼", and Jordan Woodvine followed that up in her first-career meet with the Navy and Gold by winning the Shot Put with a throw of 40' ½". Not only was it a PR for Woodvine, but it was a throw that would have placed second at the conference championship meet in years past.

In addition to Saturday's great performances, four Warrior distance runners competed on Friday night at the Linfield Ice Breaker, with both Amy Jo Murphy and Ruben Salvador-Benavides clocking conference-qualifying times. In the men's race, Salvador Benavides crossed the finish line in the 10k event in a time of 33:00.10 to qualify for the conference championships, while Murphy finished in 40:16.84 on the women's side to also qualify for conference.

The Warriors return to action next weekend at the Mt. Hood Invitational on Saturday.
