FOREST GROVE, Ore. – On a wet and rainy day at the Pacific Preview, the Corban University track & field teams shined through with strong performances in both of the long relays, capping off another outstanding showing to start the year on the road for the Warriors.
RESULTS
"On the men's side, there were two outstanding performances for this early in the year," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "The first was Zach Matteson's tie for first in the Pole Vault in heavy rain throughout the competition and the second was the win in the 4 x 400 with a great time for this early in the year. The two freshmen (Holden Quinn and Michael Schmidt) ran very competitive legs and our two veteran runners (Amadi Amaitsa and Christian Bohuslaviski) put together solid performances to solidify the win.
Zachary Matteson cleared a height of 12' 11.75" to win the Pole Vault amidst the windy and rainy conditions, officially tying for first overall with two other competitors.
Later in the day, the foursome of Christian Bohuslavizki, Regan Shira, Holden Quinn, and Amadi Amaitsa combined to dominate and win the 4x400m Relay, smoking the competition by nearly four seconds in a time of 3:22.82. Bohuslavizki also ran a solid early-season mark in the open 400 Meters, taking second overall as an individual with a time of 50.26 seconds.
Warrior senior Jason Bracken built on his standout performance from a week ago and put forth another strong showing, taking third overall in the Long Jump (21' 2.5"), and second overall in the Javelin (172' 1.25"). In addition, Asa Flanagan tied for third overall in the High Jump, clearing a height of 5' 11.5".
On the women's side the Warriors also capped off the day with a fantastic race in the 4x400m Relay, just edging out George Fox University in the final leg to capture the championship on the day. The combination of Krisi Childers, Lindsay Asplund, Kristina Yzaguirre, and Shelby Jenkins all combined for the winning mark of 4:09.43.
Childers also showed well in the 100m Hurdles with a second-place mark of 16.36 seconds while taking third in the 100 Meters in a time of 12.90 seconds.
Renee Inscore placed third overall for the Navy and Gold in the Javelin, tossing a throw of 120' 9.50" on the afternoon, while also in the field events, Naphtali Ward cleared a height of 4' 10.25" to tie for second overall in the High Jump.
In the Discus, Crystal Lynch placed second overall with a distance of 130' 3.75", while over in the Shot Put, she placed fourth with a throw of 37' 4".
"The ladies 4 x 400 ran one of the best performances we have scene for this early in the year and this was with two individuals that were new members of our Relay Team," said Berney. "Kristina Yzaguirre and Shelby Jenkins gave us hope for the future when they took the baton and never backed off in the race. Kristi Childers and Lindsay Asplund continued to give us the needed veteran leadership to get the first-place finish against NCAA Division III Universities.
Corban returns to action on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week when it heads to the Willamette Multi-Dual Meet, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
