PORTLAND, Ore. - The ninth-ranked Corban University men's soccer team continued its Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) campaign on Saturday evening, and thanks to a timely second-half goal from junior midfielder Armando Guevara (Salem, Ore.), the Warriors prevailed over Warner Pacific College (9-7-1, 7-4-1 CCC) in a tightly-contested affair, 1-0.
"Our possession and ball movement was as good today as it has been all year," said Warrior head coach Aaron Lewis. "That possession, I believe wore them out, and took pressure off our backline. This performance is one we can build on heading into another difficult week."
In most likely the latest match to ever be played by a Warrior men's soccer team as the game finished around 12 a.m. on Sunday, Corban showed its technical ability and savvy as it played a possession style game throughout the contest.
That possession eventually paid off, as after a scoreless first stanza, the Warriors found the breakthrough they were looking for when Corban junior forward Quamie Dinnall (May Pen, Jamaica) played a beautiful cross to Guevara, and Guevara made no mistake, finishing his shot past the goalkeeper and into the goal to put Corban in front in the 56th minute.
Not long after that, junior midfielder Kemar Prince (Kingston, Jamaica) ripped a long free kick off towards goal, and after it looked to be heading into the goal, it hit the crossbar and went out of bounds.
The Warriors closed out the contest from there on out on Warner Pacific's turf field, playing solid as a team defensively and sealing their 14th win of the 2015 season.
Corban (14-2, 9-2 CCC) returns to the pitch next week for its final two matches of the regular season when it travels north to take on Northwest University and The Evergreen State College on Friday and Saturday. Kickoff both days is set for 12 p.m.
