No. 20 Corban Men’s Soccer Edges Great Falls in Come-From-Behind Win, 2-1

SALEM, Ore. – Two second-half goals resulted in a crucial come-from-behind victory on Friday afternoon for the No. 20 Corban University men's soccer team as the Warriors downed the (RV) University of Great Falls, 2-1. For Corban, it marks the second-straight year that the Warriors have opened up Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) action with a triumph over Great Falls.

"Our team showed that big-time resolve we've come to expect from them again today," said Corban head men's soccer coach Aaron Lewis.

After a back-and-forth start to the contest, the Argos went in front in the 25th minute on a well-worked play in which Anthony Mota curled a ball in behind the Warrior defense, and Christopher Chavez ran onto the ball, took one touch and slotted his shot into the back of the net from six yards out.

At the half, Corban led in shots, 10-7, but Great Falls had the all-important goal at that point.

The second-half was a completely different contest, as the Warriors pressed immediately, with senior forward Quamie Dinnall getting around the edge and putting the Argos under pressure right away. While the Warriors didn't score right away, it was clear the momentum had turned in Corban's favor.

In the 58th minute, senior midfielder Kemar Prince stepped up to take a free kick, and he blasted an absolute firecracker past the Great Falls goalkeeper to level the match at 1-1. For Prince, it was his second goal on the campaign.

Just four minutes later, the Warriors earned a corner-kick, and after junior forward Timur Zhividze surveyed the box, he played a driven ball into the mixer, and junior defender Langdon Roscoe flicked a header to the back post perfectly, and the ball flew into the right-side netting, putting Corban up 2-1.

From that point on, Corban pressed for a third, and if not for Argo sophomore goalkeeper Marc Girones, the Warriors would have found that third. On a few occasions, Girones came up with big-time stops, keeping Corban out of the goal for a third time. On the day, he made nine saves in total, with six coming in the second half.

Great Falls (1-3, 0-1 CCC) did have one final chance to tie the contest late with the clock ticking down, but Warrior junior goalkeeper Jordan Farr came up with a point-blank save as time expired, lifting Corban to the 2-1 triumph.

"This win is extremely valuable to start conference play because we know the quality team that Great Falls is," said Lewis. "In addition to the three points, I know we were put in situations this afternoon that undoubtedly make us more prepared for future difficult matches."

After the triumph, Roscoe talked about the match:

For the match, Corban outshot Great Falls, 25-13, including a 15-6 mark in the second stanza. Junior forward Rolando Velazquez led the way for the Navy and Gold with eight shots, while Zhividze tallied five.

Defensively in the win, Farr notched five saves for Corban.

Corban (6-0, 1-0 CCC) returns to the pitch tomorrow when it hosts Carroll College. Kickoff at Warrior Field it set for 1 p.m.
