No. 20 Corban Men’s Soccer Registers Shutout Victory over Linfield, 1-0

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – The No. 20 Corban University men's soccer team accomplished a pair of goals on Saturday in its final non-conference road match of the 2016 campaign, with the first being earning another win, and the second being registering a shutout. The Warriors did both on Saturday night at Linfield College, defeating the Wildcats, 1-0.

"Our defensive pressure and overall organization on that side of the ball, is heading in the right direction towards conference matches," said Corban head men's soccer coach Aaron Lewis. "I'm excited about the positive trend."

For Corban, not only was it the first time it had recorded a shutout defensively, but it was the first time the Warriors had scored only one goal in a match. Thanks to the stellar team defense though, the one goal was enough in the non-conference triumph.

The Warriors almost went ahead when junior midfielder Travez Whyte had a clean look at goal, but his header went right to the goalkeeper in the second minute of play, keeping the score level at 0-0. The score would remain that way for the remainder of the half, despite Corban outshooting Linfield, 10-7, in the first 45 minutes.

In the second stanza, Corban got on the board when junior forward Timur Zhividze got in behind the Linfield defense when he touched the ball behind the Wildcats' right defender. In on goal, he was one-on-one with a charging goalkeeper, and Zhividze was able to beat the goalkeeper at the near post, putting Corban in front 1-0 in the 49th minute of play.

For Zhividze, it was his fifth goal of the 2016 season, and he has scored in every game while donning a Warrior uniform thus far in his career.

From that point on, Corban locked things down in the back, and for any shots the Wildcats (0-1) took, Warrior junior goalkeeper Jordan Farr was there to make the save, ultimately racking up six total saves in the shutout victory.

Corban outshot Linfield on the evening, 17-12, while holding the slight edge in corner-kicks, 4-3. Zhividze led the way with four shots, while a number of others also tallied a pair of shots in the win.

Corban (1-0) returns to the pitch for its first home match of the 2016 season next Saturday, September 10. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. vs. cross-town rival, Willamette University. Live stats and live video will be available on Warrior TV.
