Warrior Softball Stumbles to No. 6 Simpson Twice in Sunday Doubleheader

WEST LINN, Ore. – The Corban University softball team came up against a determined No. 6-ranked Simpson University (Calif.) squad on Sunday, and the Red Hawks downed the Warriors twice in a non-conference doubleheader. After winning the first game, 3-2, Simpson then won the second game of the day, 5-0.

On the season, Corban now boasts a 17-4 overall record and a 3-2 record in games played against Simpson.

"Today's losses were disappointing because we did not play our style of ball in either game," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We did not execute or adjust well, and made too many errors to win against a good ball club. We know what we are capable of this year and will work this week to get back on track."

Game one saw both team's pitchers throwing the ball well, and after Simpson took a 1-0 lead in the third, Corban's Jessie Isham ripped an RBI double to right-center, scoring Maddy Melton on the play.

The Red Hawks scored again in the fifth inning, however, taking advantage of a couple of Warrior errors to go ahead 3-1.

Warrior senior center fielder Taylor Eilders responded for the Navy and Gold in the bottom of the fifth with a long solo home run over the left-field fence to cut the deficit to just one run.

Corban then threatened in the seventh inning, getting a runner on base, and with Eilders lurking in the on-deck circle, the Red Hawks were able to record the final out and secure the 3-2 win. In the defeat, both Eilders and Isham notched a pair of hits for the Warriors.

Game two saw Simpson step up and make some great defensive plays to keep the Warriors at bay offensively.

Allie Mendez was also throwing well for Corban in the circle, and heading into the fifth inning, the game was tied at 0-0. Simpson then scored one in the fifth, but the Warriors threatened to score with a pair of runners on in the sixth. An inning-ending double-play negated that opportunity, however, and then the Red Hawks took advantage of three Warriors errors in the seventh to extend their lead to 5-0, resulting in the non-conference win.

In the loss, both Isham and Aubrene Blas recorded a pair of hits, while on the day as a whole, Corban totaled only 10 hits overall.

Corban (17-4) is schedule to return to CCC action on Friday when it hosts Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) foe, Northwest Christian University. Stay tuned for any updates to the schedule at CorbanWarriors.com.
