Corban Softball Falls to SOU in CCC Title Game – Still Headed to Nationals

SALEM, Ore. – The No. 20-ranked Southern Oregon University softball team captured the 2017 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament Championship on Monday, downing No. 15-ranked Corban University in the title game, 4-1. Despite the loss, the Corban Warriors are still headed to the NAIA National Tournament thanks to winning the CCC regular-season title and garnering the CCC's first automatic berth.

"We had a lot of opportunities to score and did not capitalize on them today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We also had way too many errors and didn't play well enough to win the tournament title. We know that we have a better performance in us than what we showed today. We will prepare to bring our best game every game at nationals."

For SOU, it was the program's first-ever CCC Tournament championship, and was the first time the Raiders had ever made it to the title game.

Day Three Results:

Game 9: Corban 3, Oregon Tech 1
Game 10: Southern Oregon 4, Corban 1

Corban won the opener on Monday, eliminating the Oregon Owls from the CCC Tournament, presented by U.S. Bank. Sabrina Boyd tossed a complete game, giving up just one unearned run while striking out three. At the plate, Iris Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Warriors in the victory.

In the CCC Tournament Title game, SOU took advantage of a Warrior error in the first inning and scored a run to gain the early momentum. The Raiders would add another run in the third, but Corban responded with a run of their own in the fourth to halve the deficit.

SOU regained a stronghold on the contest in the fifth with a pair of runs, however, but Corban would once again try to rally. The Warriors loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but the clutch hit was not there when it was needed most, and ultimately Karlee Coughlin finished off the Warriors, securing the CCC Tournament Title.

Coughlin threw all seven innings for the Raiders, allowing just six hits and one run while striking out two. At the plate, Kayleen Smith, Harlee Donovan, and Aaliyah Oliver all totaled two hits for the Raiders (40-12) in the victory.

For Corban (40-11) in the defeat, Taylor Eilders went 3-for-4 for Corban, while Sam Woodley went 2-for-2 at the dish. Eilders now boasts 76 hits on the year for the Warriors, a new program record for hits in a single season.

Both the Raiders and the Warriors are headed to the NAIA National Championships via the two automatic berths from the CCC. They will find out on Wednesday at 4 p.m. where they will be headed when the NAIA makes the announcement.
