Corban Men’s Soccer Drops Quarterfinal Heartbreaker to Carroll in 2OT

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The No. 16-ranked Corban University men's soccer team was forced to play from behind for almost the entire latter-half of the team's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament quarterfinal match-up against No. 7-seeded Carroll College on Wednesday evening. Despite Kohl Hurtado converting a crucial penalty kick in the final moments of regulation to force overtime, the Warriors would end up falling in double-overtime by a 3-2 final score.

"Our body of work this season has been tremendous, but tonight's result is a difficult one to accept," said head coach Aaron Lewis. "Our group has enough quality to overcome the challenges we faced tonight, but we didn't execute well in the critical moments."

The heartbreaking defeat marks the program's quickest tournament exit since 2012, when the team failed to make the CCC Championships altogether. The defeat does not necessarily mean Corban's season is over, but the Warriors will now have to rely on a possible at-large berth to advance to the NAIA National Tournament and keep their season alive.

The Navy and Gold were the first to strike in Wednesday evening's contest, with freshman Levan Zhividze finding the far post with an absolutely gorgeous free kick about 30 yards from goal. Unable to add on, however, a costly foul in the penalty box allowed Carroll's First-Team All-CCC standout Jose Porras to convert a game-tying penalty kick in the 39th minute.

After entering the midway point knotted at one apiece, the Fighting Saints struck again just 24 seconds into the second half, this time from a goal off the foot of Nick Lowrimore. Playing from behind from then on out, the Warriors searched frantically for an equalizer, finding an opportunity in the game's last moments after earning a penalty kick of their own in the 88th minute. Lewis and the Warriors called on Hurtado to take the high-intensity penalty kick, with the freshman delivering in the clutch to send the game to overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, it was again Lowrimore who haunted the Warriors, curling one in from 18 yards out to deliver the upset for the No. 7-seeded Fighting Saints.

The Corban University men's soccer team will now need an at-large bid in order to make the team's sixth-consecutive appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. The complete tournament bracket will be announced 10 a.m. PST on November 12.
