No. 5 Warrior Softball Defeats NCAA D2 Concordia in Extras at Cavalier Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. – Highlighted by a five-run eighth inning on Saturday, the No. 5-ranked Corban University softball team took down NCAA Division II foe, Concordia University, 9-4 in eight innings. The Warriors went on to dropp the nightcap against Saint Martin's University at the Cavalier Classic, 4-1.

"I am so proud of our fight the first game," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "The girls made some mistakes that put us in extra innings, but they did an incredible job of fighting for the win. Sabrina pitched a great game for us, and we had outstanding offensive production from so many players."

In the opening game of the Cavalier Classic, the Warriors jumped all over the home team (Concordia), and it was Sam Woodley that smacked a two-RBI double down the right-field line to make it 2-0 in the first inning. Megan Rybar followed that up with an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0.

Concordia, which used to be a member of the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) a few years ago, answered with a run in the fourth to cut into the deficit, but then Rybar blasted a home run over the left-field wall in the fifth, pushing Corban's lead back to three runs.

The Cavaliers rallied, however, scoring one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the game and send it to extra innings. In that decisive eighth frame, Chaleigh Kirkwood ripped a big RBI double to right field, and Mahina Chong tripled to center field, serving as a couple of the big plays in the five-run inning.

Both Chong and Rybar finished with two hits apiece in the victory, while in the circle, Sabrina Boyd went the distance, throwing all eight innings while giving up eight hits and four runs in her third victory of the year.

In the contest against Saint Martin's later in the day, the Warriors were aggressive on the base paths in the first inning, and as Chong stole second base, Tabby Humphrey stole home to give the Warriors the 1-0 lead.

The Saints scored all four of their runs in the fifth, however, and that proved to be the difference in the ballgame, resulting in the 4-1 triumph for the NCAA D2 squad.

In the loss, Corban totaled just two hits as a team.

"In game two, we lacked the fight to win," said Farler. "We did not play like the team we were the game before. We will need to find a way to compete under any circumstance in order to win more ball games. The team will learn from today and bounce back tomorrow."

Corban (7-4) returns to the field tomorrow for games against Saint Martin's and Western Oregon University. First pitch of the games are slated for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
