SALEM, Ore. – Sabrina Boyd tossed a one-hitter in Saturday's opener, and Megan Rybar hit a walk-off single in game two, leading the No. 13-ranked Corban University softball team to the complete series sweep of Eastern Oregon University on Saturday. The Warriors won the opener, 4-0, before then winning the non-conference contest of the four-game series on the walk-off hit, 4-3.
"I am so proud of the team for their fight and performance today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "I think that the players really honored the seniors in this program today with their fight and execution of plays offensively and defensively."
Prior to the start of Saturday's contests, Corban's seven seniors were honored in the Senior Day ceremony: Holly Martinez Moorman, Alyssa Doty, Kaylee Graney-Patterson, Chaleigh Kirkwood, Ashlyn Englehorn, Maddy Melton, and Sabrina Boyd.
Of the four games against the Mountaineers, Corban won three of them via walk-off hits. The only game that didn't require a walk-off hit was the third-game of the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) series, a game in which Boyd was absolutely dominant, allowing just one bloop-hit to the Mountaineers in the complete-game shutout.
On top of Boyd's performance, it was Mahina Chong that got things going for the Warriors offensively in the bottom of the first, as she launched a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Warriors the early lead.
Then in the third frame, the Warriors saw something for the first time in the last four years – a Maddy Melton home run. And it was not your conventional over the fence home run – no – this was an inside-the-park home run, as she lined a ball down the left-field line, and it was just out of the reach of EOU's diving left fielder. Melton, so quick out of the box, rounded second and headed for third, and when she saw coach Farler waving her home, she sprinted to home plate and made it in standing up for her first career home run.
Corban added a run in the fourth, and that would be more than enough for Boyd who closed the door on EOU. The win kept Corban tied atop the CCC regular-season standings with Southern Oregon University with one week left in the regular season.
"Sabrina threw a great game to finish with at home," said Farler. "So many kids had great offensive production today, and it was really fun to watch and coach. Thank you to all of our fans for coming out to support and making it a wonderful final home series."
Game two saw Chaleigh Kirkwood blast a two-RBI double in the second inning to give the Navy and Gold the advantage, but EOU responded with one in the fourth and then scored two unearned runs in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.
Corban would respond, however, as Chong ripped an RBI double to left-center to score Kaylee Buhrkuhl and tie the game at 3-3. A couple of batters later, Rybar played the role of hero for the Warriors, lining the game-winning RBI single through the left side, scoring Chong to lift Corban to its third walk-off win of the series.
For EOU, Lena Richards finished as the only Mountaineer batter with two hits, while the squad totaled seven in the defeat.
Corban (31-10, 19-5 CCC) returns to the field next weekend when it travels to Montana for a four-game series with Carroll College. First pitch on Friday is slated for 1 p.m. PT.
