BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The No. 2-seeded Corban University softball team came up just one game short of a repeat trip to the NAIA World Series, as the Warriors won the elimination game against No. 3-seeded Baker (Kan.) to begin the day, 2-0, before ultimately falling to No. 1-seeded Marian (Ind.), 3-1. The loss ended Corban's season.
"It is hard to find great words after you finish your season," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "I am proud of what this team accomplished and proud of how they came together to accomplish a successful season. We have such amazing kids who fought hard this year, and it is tough to see some of them end their careers today."
The season marked Corban's second-straight trip to the NAIA Opening Round, and the Warriors finish the season with a 37-15 overall record, coming just one game short of advancing to the NAIA World Series for the second-consecutive year. Corban finished with two wins and two losses at this year's Opening Round.
The Warriors were able to level things with Baker in game one on Tuesday following the loss to the Wildcats on Monday, as Corban tallied just two hits, but that would be all the squad needed in the 2-0 win. In the second inning, Jessie Isham reached via a walk, stole second base, and then came home on a Sam Woodley RBI single up the middle.
An inning later, Kaylee Buhrkuhl hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Tatum Prechtel from third on the play to make it 2-0 and double Corban's advantage.
In the circle, Sabrina Boyd was dealing, as she scattered five hits over the course of six innings, allowing no runs. She made way for Kaylee Graney-Patterson who came in and closed the door on Baker, going 1-2-3 in the seventh to earn the save.
In addition to Woodley's hit, Maddy Melton was the other Warrior that finished with a base knock in the victory.
The win put Corban into the Championship game against Marian, but the Knights would strike quickly, scoring three runs through the first three innings to nab the advantage.
Melton responded for the Warriors, singling in the fifth and Tabby Humphrey came in to score on the play, cutting the deficit to just two runs.
The Warriors tried to muster up a comeback in the final couple of frames, but it was too little too late, resulting in the season-ending defeat.
Corban finished with five hits, as Melton, Buhrkuhl, Mahina Chong, Woodley and Alyssa Doty all recorded hits for the Warriors.
"In the end, they left it all on the field and everyone can walk away proud," said Farler. "I am so proud of how this team represented Corban and our faith. I am grateful for all of the support from family, fans, and administration. We felt so much love and support all year and are grateful for that."
