ASHLAND, Ore. – The No. 12-ranked Corban University softball team dropped Sunday's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament contest to Eastern Oregon University, 2-1. The loss eliminated Corban from the conference tournament, meaning the Warriors will now need to receive an at-large berth to play in the 2018 NAIA National Tournament.
"It's tough to lose a game like we did today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "It's never easy to lose, but when you feel like you could have done more or played better, it's tough. Eastern came up with the timely hit and took advantage of their opportunity. We didn't."
Corban (35-13) will now have to wait until Tuesday to find out if it will receive an at-large berth to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. The NAIA will make an announcement of the entire tournament field at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8. In the field of 40 teams, there are nine at-large berths available.
The Warriors took the lead in the fourth inning when Sam Woodley blasted a triple to right field, scoring Jessie Isham on the play. EOU responded, however, with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth, taking control of the game.
The Warriors were unable to provide an offensive response of their own in their final three at-bats, ultimately resulting in the one-run defeat.
Sabrina Boyd went 3.1 innings in the circle, allowing two hits and two runs, while Alyssa Vidal came on in relief, surrendering just two hits while giving up no runs.
For EOU (26-21), Hailey Kline went the distance, giving up just four hits to the Warriors while striking out seven. With the win, EOU received the CCC's second automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament.
