Quick Tempo, Steady Defense Propel No. 21-Ranked Corban Men’s Soccer to 2-0 Win

SALEM, Ore. – The matchup between the No. 21-ranked Corban University men's soccer team and Linfield College on Saturday night never felt too far out of the Warriors' control. The Navy and Gold utilized a furious tempo and steadfast defense to shutout the Wildcats, 2-0.

"Our team was able to get on the ball more today, and we had some nice stretches of time of possession," said head coach Aaron Lewis. "We will continue to work on final-third movements to increase goal production. We also want to thank the alumni that came out tonight to support us, and we look forward to connecting with them further this season."

Throughout the contest, Lewis could be heard urging his team from the sidelines to command the game's tempo and maintain a consistent rhythm; and the Warriors did just that, dominating possession and mustering 28 shots to Linfield's nine.

Two of those shots found the back of the net, with Kohl Hurtado continuing to impress in the early-going of the 2018 season. The freshman forward capitalized on an excellent pass from Levan Zhividze, sneaking one past the Wildcat goalkeeper to give the Warriors an early 1-0 advantage in the 5th minute.

In addition, Camilo Avendano officially opened his account as a member of the Navy and Gold, scoring in the 54th minute to notch his first goal as a Warrior.

On the defensive end, Marcos Ochoa once again proved invaluable in between the pipes for Corban, racking up seven saves en route to the first victory of his collegiate career.

Not to be overlooked, senior midfielder Igor Hubenya dominated the midfield, making his presence felt on both sides of the ball. The reigning All-Conference honoree continued to demonstrate his value as both a disruptor on defense, and a distributor for the Warrior attack.

The new-look Warriors will seek to build upon the momentum gained from a successful week of games as the squad continues to craft its identity during a challenging preseason schedule.

The next challenge for Corban (2-0) will come on the road in the form of cross-town rival Willamette University, with kick-off set for 7 p.m. next Saturday.
