No. 16 Corban Softball Splits Opening Day at Simpson in One-Run Contests

REDDING, Calif. – After dropping the squad's 2019 season-opener in heartbreaking fashion to a walk-off grand slam, the No. 16-ranked Corban University softball team responded with a come-from-behind one-run win in game two to earn the split with (RV) Simpson University. The Warriors dropped the opener, 5-4, while taking the nightcap, 4-3.

"I saw a lot of great things out of our team today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "Game one was a tough loss. I thought we played well, but we made a couple of critical mistakes and didn't finish all seven innings mentally and physically, costing us the game. I am proud that the team was able to learn from game one and work together to get a win in game two."

Corban scored four runs in the fifth inning of game one and held a 4-1 lead headed into the seventh inning, but the Red Hawks loaded the bases and then blasted a walk-off grand slam, resulting in the tough one-run loss.

In the defeat, Kaylee Buhrkuhl went 3-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored, while Sam Woodley led the way with two RBI on one hit.

Game two looked bleak at a point, as the 16th-ranked Warriors trailed 3-1 headed into the sixth, but Corban rallied for a three-run sixth inning, highlighted by the go-ahead two-run double with two outs from Mahina Chong in the frame.

Alyssa Vidal proved vital for the Warriors in the win, getting Corban out of a jam in the fifth before then finishing out the contest to earn the crucial one-run non-conference contest.

"Ally and Alyssa pitched well, and our offense was able to string some hits together at a critical time to give us the lead," said Farler. "We have a lot of versatility this year and I look forward to seeing what the team does tomorrow!"

Crakes went 4.2. innings, dispersing six hits while giving up three runs and striking out two, while Vidal in the win went 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.

Corban (1-1) is back in action on Saturday, taking on Simpson again at 1 p.m. and then Menlo College (Calif.) at 3 p.m.
