GULF SHORES, Ala. – Scoring came early and often for the (RV) Corban University softball team on Monday, plating runs in all but one inning of the squad's 8-2 NAIA Opening-Round triumph over No. 15-ranked Campbellsville. With the victory, the Warriors have advanced to play No. 1-seeded and No. 7-ranked University of Mobile (Ala.) tomorrow morning for a spot in the tournament championship.
"I am so proud of the team for how it showed up today," said head coach Abigail Farler afterwards. "They came out fired up, and you could see it. We got great pitching performances from Ally [Crakes] and Alyssa [Vidal], the defense did a phenomenal job and came up with great plays for us, and our offense had timely hits mixed with tremendous baserunning."
After both teams were retired in order in the first, Sam Woodley (2-for-3, R, 2 RBIs) got things going offensively for the Navy and Gold in the second, launching a booming solo home run (6) to left field to open the scoring. Corban would tack on another in the third via a sac fly from Jessie Isham, then doubled the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth.
After three scoreless frames from Ally Crakes, Campbellsville would plate its first runs in the bottom of the fourth. Hannah Judd was responsible for them both, driving in Tori Humphrey and Ryley Whitney with a two-RBI double. Alyssa Vidal would enter in relief, limiting the damage to just two runs by stranding Judd at second.
Woodley provided another clutch knock with an RBI two-bagger in the fifth, helping the Warriors shift the momentum back in their favor. In the sixth, a Tatum Prechtel (2-for-4, 2 R) RBI triple and Mahina Chong (2-for-5, RBI) run-scoring single pushed the lead to five.
Kaycee Arase got in on the action in the seventh with a perfectly-placed bloop single into center, plating Megan Rybar. But it was all merely extra cushion for Vidal, who turned in three and two-thirds innings of marvelous work to earn the win (5-2).
Tabby Humphrey wreaked havoc offensively throughout the contest, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, while also swiping a pair of bags and scoring twice. The Warriors stole a total of five bases in the triumph.
In the second game of the day, top-seeded Mobile defeated No. 4 seed Edward Waters handedly, 17-0, meaning the Warriors and Rams will clash tomorrow at 11 a.m. CST. The winner will advance to the NAIA Opening Round championship game on Wednesday.
