BELLEVUE, Wash. – Ally Crakes tossed a no-hitter for the No. 24-ranked Corban University softball team in its series finale against Northwest University on Sunday, capping off the series sweep for the Navy and Gold. The Warriors outlasted the Eagles in a 7-6 victory in game one, before Crakes silenced her opponents' bats in the 5-0 game-two triumph.
"We had two more games in which we showed perseverance," said head coach Rachel Martin. "Our offense came ahead and responded in a timely manner. Our team unified for the two wins today."
Both offenses started hot in game one, as the Warriors and Eagles each plated four runs in an eventful first inning.
A solo shot from Makiah Johnson helped the Navy and Gold reclaim the lead in the fifth, an advantage that the Warriors would eventually add to with a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Those runs would prove to be vital, as Northwest mounted a comeback attempt in their final at-bats, plating a pair to draw within one. With the tying run just 120 feet away, Sarah Probasco was able to strand the runner at second and seal the victory.
Kaylee Brown continues to impress in the early portion of the 2020 season, earning the victory in the circle after six innings of two-run ball.
The top of Corban's lineup played a pivotal role in the high-scoring affair, with the Warriors' first-three batters combining to go 6-for-11, while also scoring five of the team's seven runs.
Johnson kick-started the finale in electric fashion, hitting the third pitch of the game out of the yard for a leadoff homer—her second of the day.
Though the Warriors were able to add on throughout the contest—plating single runs in the third and sixth, while also scoring a pair in the seventh—it would all just serve as added comfort for Crakes, who struck out six in the nearly-immaculate effort.
The lone Eagle baserunner to reach base in the contest was Nalomeli Memea, who walked in the sixth.
Crakes' dazzling performance is Corban's first no-hitter since Sabrina Boyd accomplished the feat against Northwest Christian in 2018.
"Ally was due that outing," Martin commented on the performance. "With the work she's been putting in and her focus from first pitch, I knew she was going to dominate. It was a well-called game by Morgan Gleeson, who is just a freshman."
Gleeson (3-for-4, R) and Sam Woodley (3-for-4) each led the Navy and Gold at the dish, while Megan Rybar (2-for-4, R) and Kaycee Arase (2-for-4, RBI, R) both collected a pair of knocks in the victory.
Corban racked up a combined tally of 26 hits between the two contests.
Corban (9-5, 5-1 CCC) will next see action in a four-game set on the road against Warner Pacific University, which is competing in its first season. The Knights are helmed by former Warrior head coach Nathan Ohta.
The games will take place on Friday (5:30 p.m./7:30 p.m.) and Saturday (3 p.m./5 p.m.) in Portland.
