No. 24 Corban Softball Extends Winning Streak to 13 with Doubleheader Sweep

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University softball team played two games on Wednesday against NCAA Division II opponent Saint Martin's University. The games were anything but similar, as the Warrior rode an offensive wave throughout the first game, taking the victory by a 15-0 tally. The Navy and Gold followed up the blowout win by eking out the Saints 4-3 in a 10-inning marathon.

"It was great to see our team come together and make the field tilt," said head coach Rachel Martin. "Our pitching staff had another huge outing. Kaylee Brown held Saint Martin's to five hits with outstanding defensive plays behind her. Ally Crakes came out on fire and continued to maintain our momentum in the second game, which allowed time for our offense to continue to fight."

The Warriors wasted no time getting on the board in game one, picking up five straight hits after shutting down the Saints in the top half of the first inning. The Corban offense was able to score four runs in the frame on a two-run double by Kayla Bailey which was followed by two RBI singles by Mariah Hyre and Ivey Uppinghouse, respectively.

The Navy and Gold would tack on a six spot in the third inning to put themselves up by ten runs entering the fourth. A Tatum Prechtel RBI walk begun the scoring in the third, followed quickly by a run-scoring single from Makiah Johnson, and a two-base hit that drove in two more off of the bat of Sam Woodley. To finish off the inning, Bailey stepped to the plate and deposited a two-run round-tripper beyond the fence in left field.

In the fourth, five more Warrior jerseys crossed the plate, courtesy of a Megan Rybar double that plated a run, and back-to-back homers from Kaylee Buhrkuhl and Woodley. Buhrkuhl's bomb was of the three-run variety, while Woodley's was a solo shot.

"It was great to see the ball fly today, the battles in the box, and to be able to execute in clutch situations," said Martin.

All that Kaylee Brown would need to do in the top of the fifth was get through it, which she did with ease, finishing off the Saints by a score of 15-0.

Brown was excellent, allowing just five hits over her five innings of work. She improved to an impressive 5-0 record early in the 2020 season.

Buhrkuhl and Woodley each had a perfect game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk, and 4-for-4, respectively. Bailey and Johnson added two hits apiece, while Bailey tallied a team-leading four RBIs in the contest.

Game two was a polar opposite experience for the Warriors, as they struggled to find an offensive rhythm against SMU starting pitcher Abby Runyon.

Kayla Bailey fired the opening salvo, as she drove in Kaylee Buhrkuhl with an RBI knock in the bottom half of the fourth inning.

The Warriors led 1-0 heading into fifth, but the Saints would finally reach the scoreboard after playing nine straight innings of scoreless softball on a throwing error that skipped past third baseman Kaycee Arase and into the dugout, allowing a runner to come across the plate.

Woodley gave the Warriors the lead again in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to left field, which the Navy and Gold hoped would be enough to hold off the Saints. Unfortunately for Corban, Saint Martin's picked up an RBI hit from Lauren Lunt in the top of the seventh to tie the game.

The Warriors were unable to end it in the seventh, as the two teams headed to the eighth inning, where each squad tallied a single run to send the game to the ninth tied 3-3.

Nothing came across in the ninth, and Corban was able to hold Saint Martin's in the top of the tenth.

The Navy and Gold used a squeeze bunt by Buhrkuhl in the bottom of the tenth to plate the winning run, sending the Warriors home with another thrilling victory, in what has been an epic start to the young season.

Crakes had a strong showing, in which she pitched all 10 innings, allowing just one earned run (three total) on 11 hits. She punched out eight opposing hitters with fantastic stuff all game long.

Buhrkuhl was the team leader in game two, going a solid 3-for-5 with an RBI (the game-winner). Bailey and Uppinghouse had two hits and one RBI each.

"Today's wins were from two different ends of the spectrum, with the heart of the Warrior truly shining through," said Martin.

The Warriors (15-5, 8-1 CCC) have now extended their winning streak to a robust 13 games heading into a huge home conference series against the No. 15 College of Idaho Yotes which will be held on Sunday and Monday beginning at 1 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
