Corban Softball Sweeps Doubleheader, Series against Argos

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The Corban University softball team sealed a valuable Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) series sweep on Saturday, winning both games of the day-two doubleheader against the University of Providence. Corban claimed a 6-4 come-from-behind victory in game one, blowing out the Argos in a 13-5 triumph (five innings) in the finale.

The Argos' Brie Clifford and the Warriors' Holly Gonzales battled it out in the circle in the first game of the day.

It didn't take long for the Navy and Gold to get on the board, as Makiah Johnson continued her torrid stretch at the plate by blasting the third pitch of the game over the fence for a leadoff home run.

Paia'ala Wilcox-Molina then doubled the advantage in the top of the fourth, when she crushed her first career long ball to make it 2-0 game in favor of the Warriors.

That lead didn't last long, however, as Providence's McKenna Montgomery roped a two-run shot in the bottom half of the stanza to tie the game with one swing of the bat.

Trying to avoid a sweep in the CCC portion of the series, the Argos took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, when Ashlee Anderson notched an RBI double to left to score the go-ahead run.

Forced to mount a comeback, the Warriors plated four in the top of the seventh. At one point, the Navy and Gold was down to its last out, with Samantha Martinez at the plate with two outs and the tying run at third base.

Martinez delivered in the pivotal moment, scoring Tabby Humphrey with a single to right. The red-hot Johnson then plated her with an RBI triple to give Corban the lead.

A couple of batters later, Megan Rybar provided some valuable insurance, scoring both Johnson and Kaylee Buhrkuhl with a two-run single.

Sarah Probasco was credited with the win in the circle, moving to 3-1 on the season. Lauren Besse recorded the final two outs of the contest, earning her first save of the campaign.

In contrast to the nail-biting first game, Saturday's series finale was never in doubt. Corban took a commanding early lead with five runs in the second, helped along by RBI knocks from Humphrey, Johnson, and Rybar.

The Argos got three of those runs back in the bottom of the third, when Sarah Bury hit a solo homer and Alivia Atlee stroked a two-run double.

While that gave the hometown squad some hope, the Warriors responded with yet another five spot in the next half inning, before following that up with three more in the top of the fifth.

Johnson finished the game 4-for-4 at the dish, scoring three times and driving in three. The Corban leadoff hitter has been unreal at the plate as of late, garnering 16 hits in her last 24 at-bats (.667 average), and pushing her season average to an impressive .379 mark.

Megan Rybar (3-for-4, 2 R) was equally exceptional in the triumph, matching her career-high with five RBIs. Stretching her hitting streak to seven games, Buhrkuhl went a perfect 3-for-3 in the victory, reaching base in all four of her plate appearances.

Tossing three innings and surrendering three runs, Kaylee Brown earned the win in the circle for the Navy and Gold.

Corban (16-10, 10-2 CCC) will return to the comforts of Warrior Field next weekend, hosting Eastern Oregon University on April 2-3.
