Hawaii Pacific Sweeps Doubleheader with Corban Softball

KANEOHE, Hawaii. – The Navy and Gold softball team debuted today in Hawaii against the Sharks of Hawaii Pacific University, dropping game one by a final score of 6-0. The Sharks then capped off the doubleheader sweep with a 4-3 triumph in game two, as errors plagued the Navy and Gold defense.

"Today the scores showed we came up short, but the strides from the first game to the second will fuel us for the rest of the season for growth. There were some great moments offensively and defensively that represented who Warrior softball is. We are ready for tomorrow as it is another opportunity to be a Warrior on the field." Head coach Danyelle Huber commented after the doubleheader.

Hawaii Pacific jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in game one courtesy of timely hits and several Warrior miscues.

Corban starter Holly Gonzales saw three innings from the rubber before reliever, Alise Olson was called upon to aid the Navy and Gold defense. Olson allowed just four hits and one earned run in her three innings in the circle.

The Warriors pulled off an impressive double-play in the bottom of the sixth inning when shortstop, Karla Calderon fielded a hard-hit ground ball, stepped on second base, and then threw to first, where Paia'Ala Wilcox-Molina received the throw for the third out of the inning.

The shut-down defense in the latter parts of game one carried into game two as the Warriors held the Sharks scoreless in the first inning of the second contest.

In the second inning, the Warrior defense faltered, allowing the Sharks two unearned runs.

In the third stanza, Reagan Davis singled up the middle which allowed Samantha Martinez and Logann Walker to execute beautiful sacrifice bunts, moving Davis to third. Senior Taylor Beasley then doubled to left, scoring the first run of the 2022 campaign.

Later in the contest, Calderon singled to the left side with only one out on the board. Not to be outdone, Madison Wyllie singled to the same spot, advancing Calderon to second. Then on a 2-2 count, Wilcox-Molina doubled to right center scoring both baserunners for the Warriors.

Senior slinger, Lauren Besse finished the complete game effort, allowing only two earned runs.

Wyllie (2-4, BB, BB) with two singles and Beasley (2-for-7) with two doubles finished the day as the only Warriors with multi-hit performances.

Corban (0-2) will head to Honolulu tomorrow to play Chaminade University. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. (HST).
