PORTLAND, Ore. – Make it ten-straight for the No. 19 Corban University Men's Soccer team (10-0-0, 5-0-0), as the Warriors shutout the Multnomah University Lions (5-4-1, 2-3) for their tenth win of the season and tenth shutout in as many games, spoiling the Lions new field dedication with a 2-0 victory.
"Multnomah created some fun and interesting challenges for us today," Warriors' Head Coach Tim Kagey shared this afternoon. "It was a great team win, and our focus is solely locked in on tomorrow's match."
Corban jumped on the board early against Multnomah, as sophomore midfielder Alexis Luna bobbed and weaved through the traffic of Lions in the home penalty box to get a shot off against goalkeeper Pablo Mendoza. Luna put more than enough spin on the ball to sail it right past Mendoza and into the back of the net.
Following a red card in the 28th minute to a Lions' defender, Multnomah had to play a man down the rest of this contest, and were able to adjust quite nicely, holding the Warriors to just the one goal from Luna in the first half.
However, in the 78th minute, the Warriors broke through for yet another score, this one off the red-hot foot of redshirt junior Nate Sherwood. The golden opportunity arose for Sherwood after the Lions knocked down a possible shot attempt, giving Sherwood enough space to rocket the ball into the upper right corner of the net, with Mendoza simply watching and unable to defend such a precisely placed ball. Sherwood has now scored a goal in his last four contests, and is now one of six Warriors to have at least four goals on the year.
The Warriors continue to be one of only two teams in the NAIA to not allow a goal thus far this season, and the only school to do so in 5+ games played. The Warriors also lead the NAIA in goals scored (42) and have more impressively scored more goals than total shots allowed on the defensive end of the field (42-36).
Luna and Corban senior forward Reggie Reyes led the Warriors with three shots apiece, with Luna, Sherwood, and sophomore midfielder/forward Andres Labate all targeting the Lions' net twice. Mendoza hauled in eight of the Warriors' 10 shots on goal for saves, but allowed two of them to squeak by to take his fourth loss of the season.
Warriors' graduate student goalkeeper Quinn McCallion (10-0-0) posted his 10th straight shutout, bringing his season total to an even 10 and claiming the fourth spot on the Corban Men's Soccer all-time single-season leaderboard all to himself. He is now two shutouts away from the single-season record of 12 by Corban all-time great and current MLS goalkeeper Jordan Farr.
An incredibly meaningful conference contest looms in the shadows tomorrow afternoon for Corban, as the undefeated Warriors meet the undefeated (RV) Warner Pacific University Knights (10-0-0, 5-0-0), with both teams looking to improve to 11-0 on the season at 2:30pm PDT at the Eastside Timbers Sports Complex.
