SALEM, Ore. – A bombardment of offense for the visiting team left the Corban University Men's Soccer team looking for answers in the first of four home games to wrap up the regular season at the Outdoor Athletic Complex (OAC), where Eastern Oregon University scored three-straight goals to begin today's matchup and eventually wrapped up a 4-1 road victory this afternoon.
"We did not show what we're capable of as a team today," said Warriors' head coach Josh Rios Noonkester. "As disappointing as the result is, we still have the opportunity to push for a playoff bid. It's all on us and how we respond tomorrow versus C of I. Thank you to all who came out to support the program today."
A pair of first half goals for the Mountaineers (6-2-4, 5-1-4) was all they needed to cruise to a three-goal victory over the Warriors (4-8-3, 3-4-3) in Corban's first home game in nearly a month's time, as the depleted Navy and Gold roster continues to recover from multiple injuries to key players that results in a limited bench for Coach Noonkester. Forwards Jahrie Gray and Marcos Bravo each scored in the 15th and 34th minute, respectively, to stack up a 2-0 lead entering the halftime break.
Forward Angel Sandoval tripled the Eastern Oregon lead 17 minutes into the second half, adding to his game resume after assisting on Bravo's goal in the opening period. Corban redshirt junior forward Irwin Leon was able to prevent the road shutout for EOU in the 74th minute after shaking the entire Mountaineer defensive unit and sneaking a shot underneath goalkeeper Anthony Lemus.
Gray secured a brace with his second goal of the contest to complete the scoring this afternoon, as the Mounties overwhelmed the Corban defense with a 21-7 advantage in shots, yet out-fouled Corban 14-6 in the process. Eastern Oregon defender Tawanda Rice took a game-high four shots with seven other Mountaineers taking at least two shots to keep redshirt junior goalkeeper Isaac Pureco busy all game long. Pureco completed the day with five saves after allowing four goals.
Corban men's soccer will have another opportunity to secure points in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings tomorrow afternoon when they host The College of Idaho (8-3-2, 6-3-1) at 2:30pm.
