Corban Softball Avoids Series Sweep, Splits Day Two Doubleheader with Bushnell

SALEM, Ore. – Sunday's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) doubleheader hosted by the Corban University Softball team represented the two opposite ends of the collegiate softball spectrum, as the visiting Beacons of Bushnell University earned a 3-0 shutout in game one before the Warriors responded with a 10-7 offensive outburst in the non-conference contest to close out their series with Bushnell on a high note.

"Glad to see us finish the weekend strong, Corban head coach Jeff Covalt detailed shortly after their doubleheader split with Bushnell. "It seems to take us a minute to get warmed up at times, but we're excited to close out the weekend with a win nonetheless."

Game 1 – Bushnell 3, Corban 0

A trio of RBI-singles represented the only scoring in game three of the four game series between the Warriors (3-34, 1-20) and Beacons (11-25, 6-15), with Bushnell scoring a single run in the top of the first, third, and sixth innings while starting pitcher Sara Martin tossed a complete game shutout in the circle. She finished with four hits allowed and just as many strikeouts while walking and hitting two batters apiece.

True freshman starter Miranda Scovil allowed just a single earned across 4.1 frames despite being credited with the loss, with four hits and three walks issued while striking out another seven Beacons to earn 19 in a two-day timeframe. Junior reliever Vanesa Quinones tossed the final 2.2 innings and allowed another run on two hits and a pair of her own punchouts.

Four different Warriors picked up base hits throughout game one, including sophomore rightfielder Breanna Crosby, freshman third baseman Hannah Griffith, freshman catcher Destinee Estrada, and junior centerfielder Regan McDaniel.

Bushnell second baseman Shyla Mead and designated player Ashlyn Martin each collected on two base knocks, while Martin singling home Mead on two separate occasions to lead all players in RBI and runs scored, respectively.

Game 2 – Corban 10, Bushnell 7

After managing just four base hits in the first seven innings played today, the Warriors' offense awoke in the series' finale with 16 hits and ten runs scored to snap their three-game skid, scoring six runs in the first three innings alone thanks to timely at-bats with runners in scoring position.

The Beacons were able to hang four in the top of the fourth to cut their deficit to just two runs, yet three Warrior runs in the bottom half of the fourth pushed their lead back to five after junior second baseman Pressley Staudenmaier and junior shortstop Isabel Carattini earned RBI-singles to left centerfield and up the middle of the infield.

Bushnell went to work in the fifth and sixth to scrap together three runs and pull within two runs once again, but another unearned run in the bottom of the sixth for Corban had the Beacs staring at a three-run shortfall heading in the final inning of action. After closing out the sixth in the circle, junior relief pitcher Amy Jankowski returned for the seventh and picked up her first save of the season to close out the I-5 rivalry softball series.

Corban junior starter Kate Banks went 3.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts to lead all pitchers, followed by senior reliever Sage Vanterpool who faced two batters before giving way to Quinones, who would earn the winning decision for her first of the year after allowing three runs on four hits. Jankowski struck out a pair of Beacons en route to the save.

Bushnell starter Emily Cole was charged with the loss after allowing six runs in 2.1 innings pitched after being credited with the win in both games one and two yesterday, with relief pitchers Alexis Perez and Emma Fournier allowing four combined unearned runs off six hits and three strikeouts.

Carattini powered the Warriors offensively with a 4-for-5 outing from the leadoff spot atop the lineup, collecting four RBI along the way. Six more Corban batters had multi-hit performances in game four, including Staudenmaier who had her single best excursion in the Navy and Gold threads with two hits, two RBI, and three runs scored.

Martin returned to the lineup for the Beacons in game two but this time as the designated player, tagging two bae hits with two RBI and a run scored. Leftfielder Brenna Wilson also tacked on two hits and scored a run from the bottom of Bushnell's lineup sheet.

Next week, the Corban softball will host Warner Pacific University (9-28, 6-15) in the final home series at Warrior Field this season, with their first doubleheader scheduled for 2/4pm on Thursday, April 17th.
