COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The Corban University Men's Soccer team fell to Walla Walla University, 3-0 on Friday afternoon in southeastern Washington. The Wolves took the lead by scoring twice in the opening half while also adding another goal in the second half. With the loss, the Warriors move to 3-2-2 overall and 0-2-2 in conference play, while Walla Walla now sits at 1-3-3 overall and 1-0-3 in conference play.
"I'm very disappointed with the effort today," Corban head coach Jordan Keegan said. "We came out flat, and they punished us for it. We struggled to show desire. We'll regroup and come out strong against Warner Pac on Sunday."
Walla Walla started off the game quickly and intensely when Eniola Smith found the back of the net in the fifth minute, giving the Wolves an early 1-0 lead.
The Warriors looked to create action of their own, earning a corner kick from freshman forward Antonio Virrueta in the sixth minute. Corban's defense was kept busy, but redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rylan Davidson made saves on two separate scoring attempts from Cai Calvo in the 27th and 38th minutes to keep the score at just 1-0.
Corban's first shot came in the 33rd minute when Virrueta's attempt was blocked. While the Warriors pondered for scoring opportunities, they earned another corner kick in the 43rd minute but came up emptyhanded.
To extend the lead for Walla Walla, Paulo Tostado scored off an assist from Calvo in the 45th minute, putting the Wolves at a 2-0 advantage just before going into halftime.
Corban was able to apply pressure in the second half, as they recorded 3 shots after halftime. However, in the 72nd minute Tostada was able to best the Warrior defense for his second goal of the afternoon, advancing Walla Walla to a lead of 3-0.
The Warriors could not find the momentum to break through Walla Walla's defense for the remainder of the match, as the Wolves held film for the 3-0 final score.
Virrueta led the Warriors with all four shot attempts, while also recording the team's lone shot on goal. In goal, Davidson played all 90 minutes, making four saves on seven shots on goal. The Warriors were able to finish with three corner kicks compared to one for the Wolves.
With two goals on four shots, Tostado led the Wolves offensively. Smith added Walla Walla's opening goal, while Calvo had the only assist. Goalkeeper Sebas Varga made one save to earn the shutout. The Wolves finished with 11 shots, seven on goal, while Corban recorded four shots with one on goal.
The Warriors will look to regroup and return to action on Sunday as they travel north on the I-5 interstate to face Warner Pacific University (2-4-2, 0-3-1) at 1pm at Eastside Timbers Sports Complex in Portland. The Warriors enter the matchup with a 0-2-2 record in CCC play while the Knights just dropped their third conference matchup earlier today.
