MILWAUKIE, Ore. – Seven combined fielding errors across 10.0 innings of play for the Corban University Softball program amounted to eight unearned runs out of the 18 allowed to Warner Pacific University, resulting in the Warriors' 10-2 and 8-0 run-rule losses against the Knights to wrap up their four game-series.
"Definitely a tough day today, not what anyone wanted to have but we got some newcomers some great experience," explained Warriors' head coach Jeff Covalt. Mckenna continues to play outstanding this season, as did Izzy and Kassandra with all having multiple hits at the plate throughout the weekend. We just need to string together a couple more hits in the same inning and things get better fast. We're excited for that opportunity next week against Bushnell."
Unforced errors continued to creep up on the Navy and Gold (0-14, 0-6) who are still in search of their first win this season, as over half the runs scored today by Warner Pac (10-8, 5-1) crossed home plate unearned due to miscues across the diamond and in the outfield. Directly correlated to these defensive struggles, the Warriors' pitching staff has been unable to escape long innings of work despite limiting their own free passes and hits allowed. Sophomore starting pitcher Miranda Scovil and senior southpaw Vanesa Quinones took the losses in games one and two, respectively, with only four combined earned runs between the two in 3.2 innings pitched.
Senior leftfielder Josie Landis and senior designated player Kassandra Douglas were the only members of the Navy and Gold lineup to tally multi-hit outings in today's doubleheader, with Landis finishing game one 2-for-2 and Douglas repeating Landis' success in game two with an identical stat line. Sophomore first baseman Mckenna Hanson and senior designated player Peyton Foreman each tallied a single RBI in the doubleheader matinee opener.
The CCC road trip continues into next weekend for Corban softball, as they'll kick off a four-game series at I-5 rival Bushnell University (3-15, 1-5) beginning on Friday at 2pm.
