LEWISTON, Idaho – Senior Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) registered a team-high 13 kills, but it was not enough as Corban's women's volleyball team dropped its season-opening match, 3-0 (13-25, 15-25, 16-25), to tournament-host Lewis-Clark State Friday at the Holiday Inn Express Volleyball Tournament.
After a one-year hiatus away from the season-opening tournament in Lewiston, Corban returned to the state of Idaho to begin its '08 campaign.
Playing against the NAIA's No. 16-ranked Warriors of Lewis-Clark State, Corban came out in the opening set and recorded a combined nine kills compared to ten hitting errors. Meanwhile, LCSC registered an amazing 14 kills versus only one hitting error en route to taking the opening set by 12 points (25-13).
In the middle set, Corban began to turn things around with a combined nine kills versus a mere five hitting errors but could not overcome 12 kills by the host Warriors. Lewis-Clark State committed a mere four hitting errors to take the second set by 10 points (25-15).
In the third and final set, Corban registered its first double-digit kill total with 11 compared to a mere six hitting errors. Unfortunately, LCSC recorded nine kills versus one hitting error to take the final set by nine points (25-16) en route to sweeping the match in three sets.
Along with Reeher, freshman Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) registered a career-high seven kills in her first intercollegiate match. Seniors Rashelle Davenport (Kalama, Wash.) and Rachel Gowen (Oregon City, Ore.) registered three kills each, while freshman Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) handed out a match and team-high 18 assists.
Lewis-Clark State was led by Anile Clemente and Julie Maciboba, who registered 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Lisa Davis and Abby Bruya combined to hand out 29 assists, as Davis led the nationally-ranked Warriors with a team-high 17.
With the loss, Corban opens its 2008 season at 0-1. On the other hand, Lewis-Clark State moves to 1-0 on its young season. The Warriors of Salem are back in action later tonight when they go head-to-head with fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference member Northwest University beginning at 6:00 p.m. inside the Activity Center on the campus of Lewis-Clark State College.
