Second Half Surge Leads Warriors Past Beacons

BOX SCORE

SPRINGFIELD, Ore.
– Senior Marissa Walter (Elk Grove, Calif.) scored a pair of late goals, as Corban's women's soccer team defeated conference rival Northwest Christian, 5-0, Saturday evening at Mike Kelly Field.

After going without a win in three straight games, Corban has put together a two-game winning streak after picking up a 2-0 victory last Saturday against Warner Pacific coupled with tonight's shutout of conference rival NCU.

With tonight's victory, Corban pushes its overall record to 5-5-2 and 2-1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian falls to 2-9-0 overall and 1-2-0 in CCC action.

Following a scoreless first half in which Corban's defense held the host Beacons without a single shot, the visiting Warriors finally got on the board at the 61:02 mark when sophomore Amanda Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) teamed with junior Erin Laughlin (Ephrata, Wash.) for the eventual game-winning goal. Laughlin began the play with a corner kick that got into the box and found the awaiting foot of Mendenhall, who knocked home the bouncing ball for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Just over three minutes later, freshman Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) registered her third goal of the season when she took the ball at the top of the penalty box and began the scoring play. Without assistance, Tsugawa elluded one Beacon defender before beating NCU's keeper for Corban's second tally of the game.

Almost fifteen minutes later, junior Genessa Neeser (Pocatello, Idaho) got into the scoring act when she scored her first goal of the season. The third-year Warrior gave Corban a three-goal advantage when she tallied her first points since scoring the game-winning goal against Cascade last season in a 1-0 Corban victory.

Not wanting to be left out of the scoring picture, Walter notched a pair of goals exactly 60 seconds apart in the 86th and 87th minute. Both scores were unassisted, as Walter scored her first goal at the 85:54 mark when she stole the ball at the top of the box and found a wide-open net for the visiting Warriors' fourth score of the night.

At the 86:54 mark, Walter scored the game's final goal when she collected her second turnover and blasted a shot from 10 yards out that sailed past a diving Beacon keeper for the 13th goal of her four-year career.

Corban cracked 15 more shots than Northwest Christian (16-1), as the Beacons' lone scoring opportunity came off the foot of Heather Henderson in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) needed to make only one save en route to picking up her third shutout of the season. In the process, Bassett extended her scoreless streak to 185-plus minutes as the last time that she was scored on was at the 84:50 mark against Concordia. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian's Calie McVicker registered a game-high five saves en route to suffering the hard-fought loss.

Mendenhall led Corban's offensive attack with four shots, while sophomore Rachel Cole (San Ramon, Calif.) and a pair of Warriors – Tsugawa and junior Katie Hanson (Salem, Ore.) – added 3, 2, and 2 shots respectively.

Corban will return to the field on Friday, October 9th, when they travel to La Grande for a 2:00 p.m. contest against the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon.
