ASHLAND, Ore. – To begin its final road trip of the 2009 season, Corban's women's volleyball team fell to the NAIA's No. 12-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon, 3-0 (15-25, 19-25, 22-25), Friday evening inside McNeal Pavilion despite a team-leading eight kills by freshman
Jenny Harman (Salem, Ore.).
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 9-16 overall and 7-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. On the other hand, Southern Oregon improves to 20-2 overall and a co-leading 14-1 in conference play.
The opening set began as a dog fight over the first 18 combined points with Harman and sophomore
Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) knotting the frame at 9-9 via a combo block. Southern Oregon would then score four unanswered points to start a set-closing 16-6 run that ended with a Warrior attack error for the final score of 25-15.
Set #2 saw Corban build an early three-point lead (6-3) following a kill by junior
Heather Anderson (Corbett, Ore.). Southern Oregon would then use a 15-5 run to build a seven-point lead (18-11) thanks to a Heather Porter kill. The visiting Warriors would get as close as three points (21-18) following a kill by Harman and a solo block by freshman
Morgan Hirzel (Fullerton, Calif.). Unfortunately, the host Raiders would close out the middle set on a 4-1 run that ended with another Corban hitting error for the final tally of 25-19.
In the third and final set, Corban would grab a one-point lead (6-5) early following back-to-back ball handling error by Southern Oregon. The host Raiders would regain the lead (8-6) thanks to a pair of kills by Porter before extending their lead to as much as four points (16-12) after a Warrior attack error. Corban would then use a 7-1 run en route to grabbing a two-point lead (19-17) thanks to an Anderson service ace. With the score knotted at 20-all, Southern Oregon used a mini 2-0 run that turned out to be the difference as Corban could not get any closer than one point on two seperate occasions (22-21 & 23-22). The host Raiders would close out the match scoring the final two points, as Corban ended the three-set affair with another hitting error for the final 25-22 score.
Along with Harman's team-leading offensive performance, Hirzel and fellow freshman
Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) added six kills each to go along with junior
Teri Braun (Dallas, Ore.) five-kill effort. Sophomore
Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) and freshman
Karisa Calderon (Murrieta, Calif.) ran the Warriors' offense with 13 assists each, while junior libero
Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.) anchored Corban's defense with a match-high tying 12 digs. At the net, Land registered a team and match-high three blocks for the Warriors to go along with two blocks each from Harman and Hirzel.
Southern Oregon was led by Leah Bergstrom and Leanne Stennett, who had a match-high 10 kills each. Porter and Megan Bartling added 7 and 6 kills respectively, while Angela Spieker handed out a match-high 24 assists for the nationally-ranked Raiders. Becky Johnston anchored SOU's back row with a match-high tying 12 digs, while Stennett and Bartling registered a team-leading two blocks each.
Corban will close out its road schedule tomorrow evening – October 31st – against the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Danny Miles Court in Klamath Falls.
