Warriors' Surge Stopped by Ranked Raiders

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore.
– Sophomore Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) and freshman Bailey Wold (Spokane, Wash.) combined for 21 kills, but it was not enough as Corban's women's volleyball team fell in three sets to the NAIA's No. 17-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

Southern Oregon jumped out to a quick seven-point lead in the first set (12-5) before consecutive kills by Wold brought the Warriors back within five at 12-7. The Raiders then used a 4-0 spurt to push further into the lead. With the set seemingly out of reach, Corban went on a late 4-0 run, highlighted by kills from Wold and junior Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) to go with a service ace by freshman Allison Pargeter (Anchorage, Alaska). The surge pulled the Warriors within eight at 23-15, however SOU rallied to win the set on a kill by Sarah Holgen (25-16).

In the second frame, Southern Oregon would win six of the first seven points to take an early five-point lead (6-1) before Corban closed within three (11-8) on another kill by Wold. The Raiders responded with a 9-3 run to take control of the set on the way to a 10-point victory (25-15).

The Warriors gave the Raiders all they could handle in the third set, forging ties with SOU at six, seven, eight, thirteen, fifteen, and seventeen points before taking an 18-17 lead on a kill by  sophomore Jenny Harman (Salem, Ore.). Once again, Southern Oregon responded with a 7-3 run to set up three consecutive match points at 24-21.

Corban dug deep to stay alive, reeling off four straight points to earn a set point of their own.  After the Raiders took two straight points to force another match point, Land put home another kill for the Warriors to knot the set at 26-all. Again tied at 27-all, Wold served a powerful top-spin heavy ball that dropped in the back right corner for her second ace of the match and another Corban set point. SOU countered with a Holgen kill before a kill by senior Heather Anderson (Corbett, Ore.) gave Corban its third chance to win the set. Unfortunately, the Warriors' push fell short as Southern Oregon rallied to win the final three points of the match, using a kill by Leah Bergstrom bookended by two Corban attack errors to secure a 31-29 victory and complete the three set win.

Corban's offense was led by Baskoro's team-high 11 kills, while Wold put away 10 kills of her own. Harman and Land tallied five and four kills respectively to go along with junior Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) and sophomore Karisa Calderon (Murrieta, Calif.), who registered a team-high tying 16 assists apiece. Freshman libero Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.) recorded a team-high 14 digs to go with 13 digs by Baskoro. Harman and Calderon also led the Warriors with a team-high tying two blocks each.

Southern Oregon was led by Holgen's match-high 20 kills and Lindsey Stone's match-high 39 assists. SOU libero Becky Johnstone recorded a match-high 18 digs, while Bergstrom finished with a match-high eight blocks to help lead the Raiders to a new program-record 27 blocks over three sets.

With the loss, Corban falls to 9-9 overall, including a 7-9 record in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon improves to 17-3 overall, including a 14-1 record in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the court on Saturday, October 30th, as Corban hosts Oregon Tech on Senior Night in a contest beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
