SALEM, Ore. – Senior
Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) led the Warriors with a team-high nine kills, but Corban's women's volleyball team fell to the NAIA's No. 18-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon, 3-0 (18-25, 23-25, 17-25), Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Land tallied her nine kills on 19 hits with just one error for a .421 attacking percentage, her second .400-plus such percentage in as many matches. Junior
Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) added six kills, a match-high tying two blocks and a service ace, while senior
Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) handed out a team-high 14 assists to go with an ace of her own. Sophomore libero
Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.) led the Warriors with a match-high 12 digs, while Land's two service aces set the match-high mark.
In the first set, Corban built a three point lead (9-6) before Southern Oregon turned the tables with a strong 11-1 run to take control of the first frame en route to a seven-point victory (25-18).
The Warriors scrapped for another early lead in the second set, jumping to a 12-8 advantage. The Raiders surged back into the lead courtesy of a 7-2 run which crafted a 16-14 SOU advantage. Corban two of the next three points to close within one (17-16), but SOU responded with 4-1 run to take control (21-17). After both sides traded several points, the Raiders moved within one point of taking the set (24-20). Corban rallied to save three set points, but ultimately succumbed 25-23 when SOU's Haley Fikso put away a set-clinching kill.
Set #3 would belong to the 18th-ranked Raiders, as Southern Oregon jumped out to a 7-2 early lead. Corban managed to close the gap to three points several times, but could come no closer. The Raiders turned a 18-15 lead into a eight-point set victory (25-17) with a match-ending 7-2 surge as SOU's Sarah Holgen put away three kills, including one on the set's final point, during the run.
Holgen and Megan Bartling each tallied a match-high 13 kills to lead Southern Oregon's offense. Caryn Westrick set a match-high 22 assists, while SOU libero Becky Johnstone contributed a team-high 10 digs. Bartling added a match-high tying two blocks for the Raiders.
With the loss, Corban falls to 8-9 overall, including a 2-7 mark in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon improves to 10-4 overall, with a 7-2 record in CCC play. Corban will return to action next Friday - October 7th - when the Warriors travel to Caldwell, Idaho to face the NAIA's 7th-ranked 'Yotes of The College of Idaho in a match scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
