Sullivan Tricks Beacons of Northwest Christian

BOX SCORE

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Sophomore Audrey Sullivan (Puyallup, Wash.) registered a natural hat-trick, as Corban's women's soccer team picked up a crucial CCC victory over rival Northwest Christian, 5-0, Saturday at Morse Field.

We struggled to finish in the first half just missing some opportunities and their keeper making some great saves," said head coach Marty Ziesemer. "We came out with a desire to put more pressure on their defense and it paid off with two quick goals to start the half. Now we have to get focused for two challenging games on the road next week with a playoff opportunity on the line."

Sullivan became the first member of Corban's women's soccer team to score three goals in a single game since former Warrior Natalie Haddix accomplished the feat against Mills College during the 2008 season.

Despite not putting home a goal over the opening 33-plus minutes, Corban netted the only goal of the first half at the 33:09 mark when Sullivan teamed with fellow sophomore Emily Boudreau (Emerald Hills, Calif.) on a point-blank strike following a crossing pass.

Corban would hold the slim one-goal lead at halftime before exploding for four goals over the final 45 minutes beginning with Sullivan's second of the afternoon in the 49th minute off an assist from junior Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.). The third-year Warrior would begin the scoring play with a crossing pass in front of the goal that found an awaiting Sullivan, who tapped home the second goal of the game.

Forty-four seconds later, Sullivan would finish off her hat trick thanks to an assist from fellow sophomore Tera McDonough (Boise, Idaho). The scoring play would begin with McDonough sending a long through ball up to Sullivan, who went one-on-one with Northwest Christian's keeper before sending a shot into the back of the net off a diving NCU net-minder. Sullivan's third goal of the day turned out to be her team-leading 12th of the season, as the second-year Warrior also leads the team in points with 31.

Even with a three-goal lead, Corban did not stop the offensive pressure with sophomore Rileigh Mankin (Manteca, Calif.) netting her second goal of the season in the 58th minute off another assist by McDonough. Mankin's goal would come via a header off McDonough's corner kick that put the visiting Warriors up by four goals.

In the 71st minute, junior Brittany Bowman (Shelton, Wash.) would get into the scoring act off a combo assist by freshman Sierra Brusven (Silverton, Ore.) and Tsugawa. Bowman would receive a combo pass from Brusven and Tsugawa 18 yards away from the goal before chipping a shot up and over NCU's keeper for the game's final score, as Bowman netted her fourth goal of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) registered her second shutout of the season thanks to a pair of saves, while Northwest Christian's Ali Foster recorded a game-high four saves in between the pipes for the Beacons.

Offensively, Corban controlled all facets that included total shots (13-to-5), shots on goal (9-to-2), and corner kicks (5-to-0).

With today's win, Corban improves to 9-6-0 overall and 4-3-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian falls to 1-13-0 overall and 1-6-0 in league games. The Warriors will return to the field on Monday, October 24th, against non-conference opponent Trinity Lutheran beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.

NOTE: Monday's game will be the final home game of the regular season for three Warrior seniors – Rachel Cole (San Ramon, Calif.), Amanda Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.), and academic senior Bowman. At halftime, Corban Athletics and the women's soccer program will take time to honor the aforementioned female student-athletes for their time donning the navy and gold.
