Day #2 of CCC Championships Includes Qualifier

GRESHAM, Ore. – Corban's men's and women's track & field teams sit in eighth and fifth place, respectively, after the second day of the 2011 Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships Friday at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College.

The Warriors have amassed a team total of 29 points on the women's side, while the men's team has secured a total of 11 points through the opening two days of this year's conference championship meet. On the women's side, Concordia leads the field with 144.5 points and holds a 77-point lead over Eastern Oregon heading into the third and final day. Southern Oregon leads the men's contingent with 109 points and leads Concordia by 18 points with just one day remaining in the season for some teams.

Included in Friday's action was Corban's first-ever NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships qualifier in the decathlon, as sophomore Taylor Wilkins (Milwaukie, Ore.) scored a school-record 5,181 points surpassing the automatic qualifying point total of 4,500 by more than 600 points. Despite meeting the automatic qualifying point total, Wilkins probably not be traveling to the national championship meet since he is not ranked in the Top 16 in the country.

On the second day of the decathlon, Wilkins scored an afternoon-high 494 points thanks to a third place finish in the javelin with a throw of 43.55 meters (142-feet, 10-inches). Wilkins would score 2,482 points on the second day after posting 2,699 points on Day #1 that included a second place finish in the shot put.

In other events, senior Bianca Davis (Ontario, Ore.) finished seventh in the 100 meter dash thanks to a time of 12.90 seconds en route to capturing two points for the Warriors.

Freshman Hannah Whitehead (Lebanon, Ore.) would earn four points for Corban with a fifth place finish in the women's 400 meter dash after posting a time of 58.43 seconds. Junior Maddie Parsons (Klamath Falls, Ore.) and sophomore Emilee Grubb (Bozeman, Mt.) also competed for the Warriors finishing ninth and tenth, respectively, with times of 59.70 and 1:00.45.

In the women's 1,500 meter run, junior Courtney Welling (Springfield, Ore.) took 15th overall with a time of 5:04.23 as she was the lone Warrior in the race.

The 100 meter hurdles would feature a pair of Warriors – sophomores Becca Stanton (Springfield, Ore.) and Eliya Kohl (Salem, Ore.) – with Stanton earning one point thanks to a seventh place showing after posting a time of 17.13 second in Heat #1. Kohl would conclude the race in ninth place thanks to a time of 17.46 seconds.

In the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Lauren Cross (Missoula, Mt.) earned a point for Corban finishing seventh overall with a time of 12:13.26.

Corban's 4x100 meter relay team would earn the Warrior women's team their highest point total earning five points after a fourth place finish in a time of 49.50 seconds.

The women's long jump would produce the team's most combined points, as Davis and Kohl earned nine points together following a fourth and fifth place finish, respectively, with Davis leaping 4.94 meters (16-feet, 2.50-inches) to go along with Kohl's jump of 4.89 meters (16-feet, 0.50-inches).

In the women's hammer throw, sophomore Rian Miller (Plummer, Idaho) finished 11th overall with a toss of 31.80 meters (104-feet, 4-inches).

Junior Amy Renfro (Albany, Ore.) closed out the program's first-ever heptathlon finishing fourth overall with a two-day total of 3,006 points en route to earning five team points. Renfro would add to her second day total by winning the 800 meter run in a time of 2:31.54 en route to earning an afternoon-high 674 points.

On the men's side, senior David Anderson (Salem, Ore.) would finish sixth in the 400 meter dash thanks to a time of 49.84 seconds en route to earning three team points. Sophomores Seth James (Snyder, Colo.) and Bryce Petersen (Salem, Ore.) would also run in the race finishing 15th and 16th, respectively, with times of 51.28 and 51.70 seconds.

In the 1,500 meter run, senior Ben Search (Battle Ground, Wash.) and sophomore Taylor Adrian (Portland, Ore.) would turn in ninth and 12th place showing with times of 4:03.80 and 4:08.19.

Freshmen Kyle Croft (Spokane, Wash.) and Jordan Hatfield (Heppner, Ore.) would run in the men's 110 meter hurdles finishing eighth and 12th, respectively, in times of 15.78 and 16.87 seconds. Croft would earn one point towards the team total in the event.

A trio of Warriors – sophomore David Brown (Meridian, Idaho), sophomore John Trimble (Vancouver, Wash.), and senior Jason Hardrath (Baker, Ore.) – would run in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase finishing ninth, 17th, and 19th respectively. Brown posted a Corban-best time of 9:41.80 in the event, while Trimble (10:26.71) and Hardrath (10:40.85) both broke the 11-minute mark.

Corban's 4x100 meter relay team grabbed two points for the team with a seventh place showing after posting a combined time of 44.80 seconds.

In the long jump, freshman James Myrvold (Sandy, Ore.) finished fourth overall with a leap of 6.72 meters (22-feet, 0.75-inches) to earn five points for the Warriors. Sophomore Joash Pangilinan (Honolulu, Hawaii) would also compete in the long jump finishing 13th overall after registering a mark of 5.89 meters (19-feet, 4-inches).

Both teams will return to the track tomorrow – Saturday, May 14th – for the third and final day of this year's CCC Championships beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College.
