Duo Finishes in Top 3 in Decathlon at Pacific Preview

FINAL RESULTS

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Sophomore Jordan Hatfield and junior Taylor Wilkins finished second and third in the decathlon, as Corban's men's track & field team completed competition at the Pacific Preview Saturday at the Lincoln Park Stadium.

Hatfield set a new school-record with 5,509 points, while Wilkins registered 5,422 points. Puget Sound's Joe Cerne would win the decathlon with 5,863 points following by Hatfield, Wilkins, Pacific's Aaron Koford (5,251 points), Pacific's Ted Wogan (5,135), Pacific Lutheran's Alan Bell (5,101), and Pacific Lutheran's Joseph Mungai (4,620).

After the opening day of competition, Hatfield held a slim four-point lead over the field and continued to hold the lead after the first event of the second day – the 110 meter hurdles – despite a fourth place finish thanks to a time of 17.30 seconds that was good enough to earn 593 points to increase his six-event total to 3,527 points. Wilkins on the other hand would fall one spot following a fifth place showing with a time of 18.10 seconds that was good enough to earn 510 points for a total of 3,422 points after six events.

Hatfield would fall into second place trailing by 20 points after the discus thanks to a third place finish with a throw of 29.33 meters (96-feet, 3-inches) that would earn the second-year Warrior 451 points for a seven-event total of 3,978 points. On the other hand, Wilkins would remain in fourth place after a fifth place showing in the discus registering a throw of 28.74 meters (94-feet, 3-inches) that earned him 440 points for a total of 3,862 points through seven events.

In the eighth event, Cerne would take the lead for good with a victory in the pole vault clearing the bar at 4.32 meters (14-feet, 2-inches) to earn 708 points moving into the lead with 4,679 points. Hatfield would continue to hold the lead for second place after a tie for second place in the pole vault leaping 3.40 meters (11-feet, 1.75-inches) that was good enough to earn 457 points to push his eight-event total to 4,435 points. Meanwhile, Wilkins would fall into fifth place overall after finishing in a three-way tie for fifth after clearing the bar at 2.74 meters (8-ffet, 11.75-inches) en route to earning 296 points for a total of 4,158 points after eight events.

Hatfield would increase his hold on second place by 239 points in the ninth event – the javelin – thanks to an event winning throw of 51.64 meters (169-feet, 5-inches) that was good enough to earn 613 points for a nine-event total of 5,048. Meanwhile, Wilkins would move up to fourth place overall thanks to a third place finish with a throw of 44.86 meters (147-feet, 2-inches) that was good enough to earn 513 points for a total of 4,671 points through nine events.

The tenth and final event would see Wilkins move into third place overall thanks to a winning time of 4:28.97 in the 1,500 meter run, as the third-year Warrior earned 751 points to end the decathlon with 5,422 points. On the other hand, Hatfield would finish sixth overall in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 5:17.89 but still earn enough points (461) to withstand the charge of Wilkins by 87 points for second place with 5,509 points.

Corban's men's track & field team will be back in action on Saturday, March 24th, at the Lewis & Clark Meet beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Eldon Fix Track at Griswold Stadium in Portland.
