BOX SCORE SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University volleyball team tied a season-high for attack errors in a three-set match with 23 hiccups and fell in straight sets to No. 10 Southern Oregon (25-16, 25-11, 25-19) on Friday night.
In the opening frame, the Raiders rushed to an 8-2 lead thanks to five early kills by senior outside hitter Motade Atanda. However, the Warriors (5-14, 2-10 CCC) bounced back, as a kill by senior outside hitter Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) ignited a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to one (8-7). After freshman outside hitter Shantelle Hill (Pasco, Wash.) swung in for a kill to bring Corban to within two (13-11), Southern Oregon responded to score 11 of the next 14 points to reach set point. With the Raiders leading 24-16, Corban coughed up a service error to hand the set to Southern Oregon.
Set two saw Corban's least efficient set, as the Warriors attacked for a -0.114 hitting percentage. Despite the poor precision, the Warriors managed to crawl to their only lead of the match, 6-5, after Bailey swooped in for a kill. But again Atanda stole the spotlight, as she attacked for four straight kills in the midst of a 10-0 Raider run. A Corban attack error brought Southern Oregon to set point (24-11), and a kill by senior outside hitter Paulla Pinheiro granted the Raiders a two-set lead.
The Raiders (16-3, 10-1 CCC) looked like they were going to run away with the third stanza, as a kill by Atanda capped a 4-1 run to start the set. A pair of Bailey kills and four Southern Oregon attack errors helped Corban tie the set at seven apiece, but the Raiders managed to slam back with an 11-4 run to take a seven-point advantage (18-11). The Navy and Gold refused to give up, as the Warriors rallied to cut the deficit to two (21-19) after receiving a spark from freshman opposite hitter Shelby Miller (Lebanon, Ore.). But Atanda continued to give the Warriors nightmares, attacking for two kills in the midst of a 4-0 Raider run to put Corban away.
The Warriors were led by Bailey and freshman outside hitter Sloane Morrison (Edmonds, Wash.) as they attacked for eight and six kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Haley Meili (Eugene, Ore.) compiled 21 assists for Corban, and senior libero Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.) paced the defensive end with 13 digs.
Atanda steamrolled the Raider offense with 18 kills in the match. Pinheiro notched 10 kills, and sophomore setter Lauren McGowne recorded 34 assists. In addition, senior libero Brookelynn Cole led the Southern Oregon back row with 14 digs.
As a team, the Navy and Gold attacked for 24 kills and 23 errors out of 101 attempts (0.010), while Southern Oregon hit a 0.225 percentage with 42 kills and 18 errors out of 111 attempts. The Raiders, who lead the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) in blocks per set, recorded 13 in the match compared to eight by Corban.
The Warriors return to the hardwood on Saturday evening to take on Oregon Tech in Salem, Ore. at 5 p.m.
