CALDWELL, Idaho – The Corban University volleyball team came up against a College of Idaho team that was firing on all cylinders on Friday evening, and the Warriors fell in straight sets to the Yotes (25-20, 25-17, 25-16). With the defeat, the Warriors end up splitting the season series with C of I following a four-set victory at home almost a month ago.
"We struggled with passing, and if we can't pass, it is hard to run our offense," said head coach Kim McLain. "C of I played great tonight, and we were not on our game! Blocking was non-existent, and that too really hurts defensively when you have such great attackers across the net."
In set one, Warrior sophomore outside-hitter Amber Parker (Albany, Ore.) gave Corban the lift it needed early on, pounding a few kills into the ground to give the Warriors the early 8-6 advantage, but that would be the last lead the Warriors would hold, as C of I slowly pulled away in the five-point set victory.
In the second stanza, another quick start from Corban and a pair of kills from junior middle-blocker Hannah Olson (Coos Bay, Ore.) put Corban up early on, but once again, the Yotes fought back and were hitting at a very efficient rate, eventually pushing in front and taking the set comfortably.
In the third and final set, C of I (11-9, 9-3 CCC) took a big lead early, and while Corban showed resiliency, fighting back to keep it close, the Yotes finished the set strong, taking the match in straight sets.
Parker, who came into Friday's contest leading the NAIA in kills per set, led the way once again for Corban with 14 kills on the evening. Freshman Victoria Schroeder (Corvallis, Ore.) notched 11 kills on the evening to support Parker offensively.
Freshman setter Madison McLain (Albany, Ore.) served as Corban's primary setter on the evening, totaling 33 assists on the night. Defensively, sophomore Haley Wells (Albany, Ore.) recorded a team-best 12 digs in the defeat.
As a team, Corban hit at a .155 clip offensively, while the Yotes were firing on all cylinders, notching a .407 attacking mark in the victory.
Corban (8-9, 6-5 CCC) returns to the court tomorrow night to take on No. 7 Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore. Be sure to follow the action via the live stats and live feed feed.
