SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - The Corban women's soccer team's 2015 campaign came to a close on Wednesday in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament quarterfinals, as the Warriors battled hard against the College of Idaho, but Corban came up short against the Yotes in a 3-0 defeat. On what was a very chilly evening with fog rolling in across the pitch, the Warriors were unable to muster up enough offensive firepower, ultimately sealing the defeat.
"I was proud of the team and the way they played tonight," said Corban head coach Marty Ziesemer. "The score was not at all indicative of the game or the way it was played. We did a great job causing them some issues with our pressure. To give Brian and the Yotes some credit in that scoring on a counter attack goal early in the second half really changed how we needed to play. Unfortunately we were not able to find the back of the net, and in the end, that is what counts."
Corban thought it had jumped in front early on when the Warriors sent a ball into the back of the net, but the linesman signaled for offside on the play, negating the goal and forcing Corban to track back defensively.
In the 20th minute of play, Camas Curran recorded the go-ahead goal for the Yotes, scoring on a bit of a scramble in the box off of a corner-kick, ultimately being in the right place at the right time to put C of I in front. Then in the second half in the 53rd minute, Allie Boyd scored a one-timer into the lower-left corner off a cross from Jamiece Yizar, extending C of I's advantage to 2-0.
The Warriors pushed to try to find the goals necessary to equalize the match late on, but the Yotes eventually scored a third when Yizar scored with seven seconds left to seal the win.
Corban was outshot on the day by C of I, 14-11, and Warrior sophomore goalkeeper Sheyenne Brusven (Silverton, Ore.) showed why she was named to the All-CCC Second Team, making great save after great save, keeping the Yotes off the board on a number of occasions.
Offensively, Warrior freshman forward Lexi McQueary (Kennewick, Wash.) racked up a team-leading four shots, three of which went on goal, while sophomore defender Taylor McLaughlin (Salem, Ore.) notched three total shots and three shots on target on the evening.
Corban finishes the year with a 7-11-1 overall record and its third-straight berth in the CCC Tournament.
College of Idaho advances on to play tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the CCC Tournament semifinals vs. No. 3-seeded Eastern Oregon University.
