Corban Women's Basketball Stumbles to 19th-Ranked L-C State, 88-67

LEWISTON, Idaho - The Corban University women's basketball team took on NAIA Division I opponent Lewis-Clark State College on Friday night in the Twin Rivers PT Classic, and despite a 21-point effort from senior guard Julia Young (Snohomish, Wash.), the Navy and Gold fell to 19th-ranked L-C State, 88-67.

"We played a very veteran team in L-C State with both inside and outside threats, yet we did not give up," said Corban head coach Dave Bale. Julia had another very good shooting night, hitting 3-of-5 from three, and was perfect from the line. Jade is a marked woman due to her first outing, but she still hit 3-of-7 from the arc and pulled in seven rebounds. We shot 41% from the arc and 77% from the line."

Corban was outscored in each quarter, but the Warriors kept it close in the second half, only getting beat by four total points in the third and four quarters combined. It was a tough first quarter that ultimately doomed Corban, as the Warriors were outscored 27-14 in the stanza.

A couple of the key differences that separated the two squads on the night were bench points and points in the paint. L-C State got 42 points from its bench, while Corban got just 10, and the L-C State Warriors also dominate the paint, nabbing a 32-10 advantage on points in the paint.

As a team, Corban shot 31.5% from the field, while going 40.9% from long range. From the charity stripe, the Navy and Gold went 24-of-31 for 77.4%.

Young led the way with 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting for Corban, making three shots from deep, while senior guard Jade Lowery (Oregon City, Ore.) went 5-of-15 overall for 14 points. She also grabbed a team-best seven boards.

Kaylea Knox tallied a game-high 23 points for L-C State, leading the home side to the 21-point win.

Corban (1-1) returns to action tomorrow when it takes on the University of Montana-Western in its second game of the weekend. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
