Wilcox’s Big Night Leads Corban Women’s Basketball to 71-68 Triumph over Concordia

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team registered its first road win of the year by defeating former Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) opponent, Concordia University, on the road on Saturday night, 71-68. For the Warriors, it is their second win in a row, leveling their record at 3-3 overall early on in this 2015 campaign.

"Tough defense and good shooting from the line countered Concordia's 19 offensive rebounds," said head coach Dave Bale. "We handled their pressure committing only 13 turnovers, and Payton had a big game scoring and led us with six boards. Julia and Jade made some big shots down the stretch, and it was just a great effort by all!"

While playing fantastic defense in the first quarter and giving up just nine points while scoring 14 themselves, the Warriors and Cavaliers battled it out in the second stanza and went into the halftime break tied at 29-29. A big 26-point third quarter for Corban pushed the Warriors in front by nine points, and then the Navy and Gold held off late surges by the Cavaliers en route to the victory.

Corban (3-3) was led by junior forward Payton Wilcox (Salem, Ore.) on the evening, as she racked up a career-best 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with an 8-for-8 mark from the line. She also grabbed a team-best six boards while dishing out one assist. Senior guard Julia Young (Snohomish, Wash.) continued her solid start to the 2015-16 campaign with 17 more points on 6-of-15 shooting, while senior guard Jade Lowery (Oregon City, Ore.) chipped in 13 points as well.

As a team, the Warriors shot 44.6% from the field and 93.8% from the free-throw line (15-of-16).

Defensively, Corban locked down, forcing the Cavaliers into 17 turnovers while also holding Concordia to just a 37.1% shooting mark on the night.

Corban returns to the hardwood on Tuesday, November 24 when it travels south to take on William Jessup University (Calif.) at 2 p.m.
