SALEM, Ore. – Thanks to outstanding performances from Corban's sharp-shooting duo from Southridge High School, the Warrior men's basketball team closed out the 2015 portion of the season with a bang, scoring 60 second-half points en route to a 94-79 triumph over Walla Walla University on New Year's Eve. For Corban (8-5, 3-3 CCC) at the turn of the calendar year, it finishes its first six games of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play at .500.
Junior guard Caleb Herzberg (Beaverton, Ore.) had a night to remember, scoring the second-most points in his career and the most since his freshman campaign. While draining six three-pointers and shooting 9-of-12 from the field overall, Herzberg finished with 25 points for the Warriors. Fellow Beaverton native, sophomore guard AJ Monterossi (Beaverton, Ore.) recorded another spectacular night offensively, totaling 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting with seven assists. He also drained a pair from downtown as a part of Corban's 10 three-pointers on the night.
"It was nice to see Caleb Herzberg shoot the three well and AJ continues to show why he's the best point guard in the league," said Corban head coach Steve Masten.
Walla Walla actually began the game very well, keeping pace with the Warriors early on, and if not for a Herzberg three from about 10 feet behind the three-point line at the buzzer of the first half, the Wolves would have taken the lead into halftime. But with that three-pointer, Corban led by one point, 34-33 at the intermission.
In the second stanza, it was a total team effort, and a quick eight-point offensive spurt with two Herzberg threes and a dunk from freshman forward Joel Johnson (Tigard, Ore.) pushed Corban in front by 11, and the Warriors never looked back from there.
Monterossi took over the game on a number of occasions, sinking jumper after jumper while also proving to be the playmaker with the seven assists.
For the game, the Warriors shot 55.6% from the field, tying their season-best mark, and from downtown, Corban went 10-of-19, proving very efficient. Walla Walla also shot the ball fairly well, going 48.3% from the floor overall and 58.8% from beyond the arc.
For the Wolves (2-12, 0-6 CCC), Ryan Spady had himself a nice day with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Ethan Sias and Andrew Nye totaled 24 points between the two.
For Corban on top of Herzberg and Monterossi, Johnson tacked on 10 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Caleb Dozier (Beaverton, Ore.) grabbed a team-best nine boards to go with five points and four assists.
"I thought our defense was pretty good for much of the game," said Steve Masten. "We followed our game plan pretty well. Our offense picked up in the second half and that was the difference in the game."
Corban (8-5, 3-3 CCC) returns to the hardwood on Saturday, January 2, when it hosts New Hope Christian College. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. inside of the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
