Navy and Gold Baseball Loses in Extra Innings to Vanguard, 3-2

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Corban University baseball team played in extra innings for the first time in the 2015 campaign, but the Warriors came up short against Vanguard University on Tuesday afternoon, falling in 10 innings, 3-2.

"It was another tough loss for the Warriors," said head coach Jeff McKay. "Caleb Henry was very impressive for seven innings. Again, we hit some balls hard that did not find holes. The defense continues to play well."

Senior second baseman Ben Straka (Eugene, Ore.) went 2-for-2 at the dish for the Warriors, while sophomore shortstop Ryan Rosas (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) notched a hit in his only at-bat to register two RBI for the Navy and Gold.

Freshman hurler Caleb Henry (Salem, Ore.) started on the mound and pitched seven innings for Corban while striking out three batters and forcing 10 ground outs and eight fly outs. Meanwhile, junior right-handed pitcher Adam Shumka (White Rock, B.C.) suffered his second loss the season, as he tallied two strikeouts while surrendering two hits and one run in 2.1 innings for the Warriors.

With two Warrior base-runners in scoring position in the top of the second, Rosas hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score senior first baseman Peter Martin (Toledo, Wash.). The Navy and Gold proceeded to load the bases with two outs, but Corban (8-5) failed capitalize and did not score any more runs in the frame.

Vanguard played catch-up until the bottom of the third, as sophomore second baseman Justin Vega singled to right field to bring home sophomore left-fielder Brandon Sandoval. Vega eventually reached second base with two outs, but junior shortstop Jose Rojas flied out to left field to retire the side.

The Warriors eventually regained the advantage in the top of the sixth inning, as Rosas hit his second sacrifice fly of the day to score junior right-fielder Nic Coffman (Portland, Ore.).

Although Henry kept the Lions hitless for the next two innings, the Navy and Gold had trouble notching hits of their own. In the top of the eighth, senior right fielder Jordan Johansen (Maple Valley, Wash.) reached on a walk and eventually made his way to second with two outs, but Corban couldn't bring him home.

Vanguard (15-6) tied the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Rojas popped up a sacrifice fly to score Sandoval. With two outs, the Lions tried to advance sophomore right-fielder Brock Eissman to second, but freshman catcher Austin Zavala (Medford, Ore.) fired over to second baseman Stockton Taylor (Brewster, Wash.) for the tag to end the inning.

Corban had a couple of chances to take the lead late, as the Warriors advanced a runner to third base in the ninth and 10th frames, but junior right-handed pitcher Michael Jordan forced a two-out fly out in the ninth and a strikeout and groundout in the 10th to keep the Navy and Gold at bay.

In the bottom of the 10th, Rojas pulled through with a game-winning single to score sophomore pinch runner Shane Elias-Calles and grant Vanguard the come-from-behind triumph.

"We just need to be better on the offensive end," commented McKay. "We are playing hard for the Lord. It's early in the season. We are learning and getting better as we play top-level teams."

The Navy and Gold returns to the diamond tomorrow for a matchup against No. 20 The Master's College in Santa Clarita, Calif. at 2:30 p.m.
